As someone who did National service, I think its too short for military service. Min 1 month and beyond is simply too short for effective training in law enforcement and military.
I find it rather interesting that Macron himself has never done National Service, article claims he's the first French president to haven't. Seems like he may be nostalgic for something he's never actually experienced.
"At least a month" isn't necessarily that bad. It's 11 months in Estonia...
A month is so short as to be meaningless lol.
Never understood arbitrary laws that force you to risk your life for the state, but I guess in a country where people sell their bodies for college we've never experienced real manpower shortages.
Even now, the programme is estimated to cost €1.6bn (£1.4bn; $1.8bn) a year to run, with €1.75bn of investment up front.
So he cuts social aid and lowers pensions to save on budget because "there's no magic money", but then he goes and supports this?
Honestly can't say I see the use of this.
I can see the inherent disruptive qualities of civil service(in terms of lives), as well as the economic toll of it, being pretty distasteful but now, more than ever, do we need a trained and organised populace.
Having a population that's ready for anything could help in not just the obvious military applications, but in regards to terror incidents, or other disasters.
You won't turn people into soldiers in that time but you can teach plenty about how to deal with crises and emergencies
From the sounds of the article it seems like a lot of people are going to wind up working on infrastructure and stuff like that, so it might not be that wasteful.
Tho it's pretty telling that support falls below 50% for the people who will actually put up with it.
IMO having young people exposed to things like charities, disaster relief, teaching, and dealing with different cultures is very much a good thing - I can't comment on the cost of such a program because I know fuck all about money but making your citizens better human beings sounds like a pretty good idea to me
Forcing them into civil service like this against their will is wrong on so many levels.
