And there's the rub. Torturing children, seperating families, et all., is just fine as long as it means they can track down a couple undocumented immigrants who unlike the bastards responsible for this have some shred of human decency.

I wouldn't say that. Immigration courts have been doing this shit for years. However, the whole "child separation" thing is making the situation way more visible, and now it has the media's attention.
Considering that most children don't really reach a point of self awareness until ages 8 and above (I can't find a concrete source on this, some say self awareness begins to show at 18 months, but the definition for that is more recognizing oneself in the mirror, not having complex thoughts on the nature of oneself) with things like abstract thoughts and being able to interpret deeper meanings usually not appearing until ages 10-13 (again, rough estimates, depends on your definition but is usually meant to mean things like how to conduct basic literary analysis). I would really like to know how a 3-4 year old can grasp the inner workings of the US immigration system. What a load of garbage.
