100 GB You've got to be kidding me.
probably lots of audio
If you told me that Max Payne would have 30gb's when i was 12, i would have said the same thing.
All uncompressed
GTA5 needs 65GB Max Payne 3 needs 35 GB Witcher 3 needs 40 GB Fallout 4 needs 39 GB Doom 4 needs 77 GB Think about that
While bullshit, games are slowly reaching into being 100 GB. Gears of War 4 is like 130 GB, Elder Scrolls Online is approaching the 100 GB mark, GTA V is sitting at ~75 GB right now, even older games like Evil Within and Witcher 3 are taking up over 50 GB. I don't mind the file sizes if it's in the benefit of actual graphical fidelity or content, but considering the rest of Shenmue's requirements I'm going to assume the devs are just lazy and decided to pre-render all of the cutscenes or leave everything uncompressed. Or they're listing the requirement because they expect to release a fuckton of DLC in the future.
I'm OK with games taking up more and more space because that's a natural part of tech growth. No ones bitching about the need for faster GPU's, but they sure do complain about inexpensive drives. But at the same time, there is no way a game like this should take up an entire 100 gb. Witcher 3 is the best looking and sounding game of the generation, while still having the most content, and that is still only 49.9 GB on my drive.
The problem is more games which take up 100GB don't need to come even close to that. It's almost always down to using uncompressed audio, and often including every language option. Even games which don't fill out the space with uncompressed audio rarey need to use that space, it just seems like devs have decided that compressing anything isn't worth their time any more. "Oh well people have terabyte sized hard drives these days. Better take up as much space as possible." Fuck off.
Problem is we still don't have discs that can hit 100GB.
I'm pretty sure Black Ops 3 is over 100GB, so it's not like we haven't heard of this before. On the other hand, what the fuck.
Ni Oh had a similar issue of being a massive game on PC, and people found a way to lower the file size from 70 GBs to 20 GBs while barely affecting performance or overall appearance of the game iirc. People might be able to do something similar with Shenmue, though the large download time would still be a concern as that trick only worked after you downloaded it. It's kinda stupid how common this has become.
The next-gen consoles will probably use Ultra HD Blu-ray, which maxes 100GB
