BP has announced it is to buy the UK’s largest EV charging company, Chargemaster, which operates over 6,500 charging points across the country On completion of the deal, the company will be renamed BP Chargemaster, combining Chargemaster’s extensive EV charging network with BP’s 1,200 service stations, in a move that will widen access to electric vehicle charging in the UK. Under its new name, BP Chargemaster will rollout ultra-fast charging infrastructure, including 150 kW chargers capable of delivering 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. BP’s UK customers can expect to see BP Chargemaster chargers appearing on forecourts over the next 12 months. ... Founded in 2008, Chargemaster is involved in the development of EV charging points from design and build to sales and operation and runs POLAR, the largest public charging network in the UK used by 40,000 customers. While expanding the EV charging network is good , I am more worried about the fact how much BP will price it when they own like 80% or more of the entire UK network. Only time will tell I guess.
They already have a small charging network. They charge 25p / kWh (which is okay for rapids), but they are on an "introductory offer" so it's half price, so when that ends it would be 50p / kWh which is a bit crazy. For reference Ecotricity (who have rapids at Motorway services) charge 30p / kWh (or 15p if you use them as an energy supplier at home), and POLAR (Chargemaster) charge you a monthly fee but then only charge you 9p / kWh usually.
It's going to be crazy to see fuel stations become EV charging stations one day. But if you can charge at home, why charge at a station?
road trips or long hauls?
I guess you would still need some in that case, but it would be a lot fewer than what we currently have. They'll probably only be at shopping centres, highways and freeways.
How do you propose to charge it at home if you live in a commieblock?
Yeah like pointed out before, there will be times where you need a public charging station, but the number of these will pale in comparison to how many fuel stations there currently are Also, maybe apartment blocks will have charging stations included one day
