That still means 20hrs of overtime per every week.
that's still way more doable than how it was. 20 hours overtime is like, working 8 hour shifts everyday, or working 10 hour shifts for six days with one day off.
in Japan some people work almost double shifts 7 days a week.
If my company asked me to work more than 4 hours of overtime per week I'd start looking for a new job. 20 hours per week is absolutely batshit
Yeah but again, relative to Japan's status quo, this is a step forward.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
This is a good step. Japan has the strangest work culture of "look like you're an indomitable force of nature who doesn't ever stop working but only actually get anything done 10% of the time"
No wonder they have a baby shortage, everyone is too busy working to have kiddos
Probably worth reposting since it's actually more relevant here:
Chris Broad from Abroad in Japan talked about this a bit on his podcast and it's pretty ridiculous
https://www.acast.com/abroadinjapan/abroadinjapan-sixthingswedchangeaboutjapan-
From 6:23
"Attitude towards work is just ridiculous. [...] When I was at my job as a teacher, I finished at work at 4:30, but if I was there until 5:30 or 6, all the staff would come over and sort of congratulate me for being the best worker in the world. And there's this idea in Japan that by doing overtime, just by being at work, by being present, you're doing your job, even if you're just sitting there like reading a book or doing anything not related to your job. The idea that you're present at work is a really big thing. I think it's the idea that you can be called upon, if something happens you're there, right? It's silly, it lowers productivity massively, and you get a situation where a lot of workers are too afraid to go home, because if they're looking for a promotion, they wanna look good to their supervisor, so they stay at work, doing nothing. Just sat at their desk. And they'll get promoted for doing that."
Was there a while back, working with some Japanese. They told me they where happy they could come with me, since their boss was on bad terms with his wife.
Puzzle'd I asked why this mattered.
Apparently, his boss does not want to go home due to this and makes long hours. Since its the custom to not leave before your boss does, the staff has been doing useless busy work for weeks to just look occupied.
720 hours a year is still pretty insane. Over here it's max 200 hours a year.
Do people not understand that job = time and time = how much living you can do?
Mandatory overtime.. That's just depressing.
Are you working hard or hardly working?
Japan somehow manages to do both at once
There's a similar cultural issue over here, though obviously not as extreme since our labor laws are much stricter. People assume productivity is proportional to working hours. You could be the most efficient motherfucker around, finish a week's worth of work in less than a day, but if you dare to leave work somewhat earlier than usual without some kind of excuse, prepare to be teased by co-workers about "taking your afternoon off" while they numbly browse facebook.
It's particularly ironic considering we're among the most productive nations despite having relatively high amount of time off.
It's gonna be a nice day when culture reflects the fact that people are only productive for so many hours a day. Working for unholy hours only causes cancer.
Most Japanese workers have to be on salary, right? There's no way companies would be letting them sit at work doing nothing and getting paid bank for it.
Er, office overtime usually is unpaid
I work 12 hour days, 5-6 days a week. I have one day off that I end up sleeping away. I can't imagine people working more than that...
Sarariman get salary, hence the term.
Cool, now let us see how much it will actually be properly enforced...
Some people prefer money over days off
I've had people who tell me they work like 16 hours everyday and get $3k in OT pay
but they looked like they're dying
They're malaysians, they rather work hard and enjoy later
thats called time in lieu and you usually need to get it approved before you can do it. Can't just stay back an hour every day then tell your boss he now owes you $150 extra every week.
but yeah shits wack, 8 hours a day is already a lot for me when you factor in commute and other small activities

Same, same, I've left jobs asking that much OT. I have a life outside of work. And besides that, if the company can justify having more than 2 people pulling 20hrs of OT each week they can justify hiring on one more full time employee at the same wage the other full timers get. Cost them less and everyone gets to go home to their families at a reasonable hour.
The worst part is that it isn’t like they are productive to a greater extent in many fields, and it gets really obvious in game development, where the games often just kinda don’t push the boundaries, gameplay or graphically.
Then again we also put out so much shit as well, but at least we aren’t in crunch for 100% of development time
I feel like you're joking but that's actually very true.
The other problem though (at least with my job) is that they hire the bottom of the fucking barrel and no one wants to learn how to do the job.
We've had multiple people come in who puts in 0 effort and then quit the next week. These people want money but don't want to work. It screws over people like me because we don't get that extra person and I end up having to work more days because lack of people.
I've worked more than that 🤷♂️
That's literally the reason why, from what I've read. Everyone is just too busy and too isolated. People make the joke all the time that it's because of anime waifus and shit like that, but what do you think drives them to that sort of escapism in the first place? A minimum 15 hour workday, a culture that's so focused on honor that when the train is 3 minutes early it's considered cause for public ridicule.
I actually have Japanese relatives, and they've told me they really want to come to the US to escape that lifestyle and build a better life for their daughters as well. I can't say I blame them.
Japan may be cool to visit, but I would never want to work or live there.
You see kids, this is why you should never reproduce drastically below replacement rate, you gotta make the population drop subtle not a goddamn rock into well kind of a thing when it happens
You'll be figuratively enslaved to pay boomers pensions, and the Japanese are longevitious dudes
