http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/394650-north-carolina-gop-seeks-to-remake-state-constitution-dems-see-power The amendments include a measure to require voters to show proper identification when casting a ballot; a proposal to cap state income taxes at 5.5 percent; two others that would limit the governor’s ability to make appointments to vacant judicial seats and state elections boards; a measure to codify the right to hunt and fish; and a proposal to expand victim’s rights, known as Marsy’s Law. Didn't see this posted anywhere and only heard of just a bit ago.
Based on the amendments listed, I don't see why this is a problem ( except for voter ID laws.) Generally increased civil rights, restricting the power of the Governor, etc. all seem like good things.
Well the only reason they are restricting the governor is because currently we have a Democrat as governor, Voter ID laws are almost entirely racially motivated and designed to keep republicans in power, capping the income tax at 5.5 means the poor and middle class are going to be taking the brunt of the tax burden, and codifying the right to hunt and fish is strictly being put on the ballot to turn out more republican voters. Although Marsy's Law seems good and fair, and I am all for increased citizen rights, but some of these amendments are just disgusting.
So do these have any change of passing the ballot?
Well considering these are all written up by republicans and most of the republicans in NC vote strictly partisan. yes, yes it does.
There's nothing like a constitutionally fixed limit to taxation to bankrupt a state. You'd think Oklahoma and Kansas would be a case study
Even then, if there is a blue wave that they're scared of and there trying one last fuck you, wouldn't the influx of dem voters stop these? Lower taxes > everything
what exactly is the check and balance against a full red congress pushing amendments to outlaw the judicial branch
North Carolina seems to be so far ahead of the rest of the US in terms of dismantling their democracy. Like, if NC was a country they'd be up there with Hungary and Poland
The whole point is to bankrupt the state so their corporate criminal friends can make bank and run off before the whole thing collapses.
As far as I'm aware they have to put it on the ballot and let us decide, because otherwise the NC super majority would have done it already.
The only reason they are looking to restrict the power of the Governor is because the current one is a Democrat. The NC GOP is extremely corrupt.
The blue wave is unlikely to affect state governments much, especially in deep red states like SC. A lot of people unfortunately don't give a shit about state/local elections, even though those officials affect them more directly than anyone in Washington, and so only those more extreme on the political spectrum tend to vote for state reps. At least up until the era of Trump, that was mostly okay because state/local officials tended to be more centrist than anyone sent to Washington, but that paradigm abruptly ended in November 2016. My guess is it's partially due to local GOPs attempting to run their campaign like Trump instead of the normal "down to earth, I know you personally" kind there use to be.
They probably just want the governor to only be able to sign their shit, whether GOP or Dem.
