Kayla Rahn had been suffering weight gain, pain and unexplained stomach issues for months. In May, the Alabama woman finally learned why — and got some relief when doctors
removed a massive 50-pound cyst from her ovary.
"This is one of the largest I have ever seen or certainly removed," Dr. Gregory Jones, an OB-GYN at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, said in a statement about the surgery. "We are very
excited things went well for her."
The 30-year-old said before the operation, she would feel stomach pain during normal day-to-day activities. "I couldn't even walk to my car without losing my breath," she told WFSA.
Her doctors initially told her weight loss was the solution to her problems, she told the station. According to Jackson Hospital, Rahn had been trying to lose weight for about a year, but
instead kept gaining pounds.
Despite her dieting efforts, she kept getting asked a question no woman wants to hear: Are you pregnant? She had even been asked if she was carrying twins, the hospital said.
Rahn's pain became overwhelming in May and her mother took her to the ER. Doctors at Jackson Hospital ran a series of tests and found a large mass in her ovaries.
"I do remember telling my mom and busting out crying they were going to fix it. I knew something was wrong," Rahn said in the hospital's statement.
She immediately underwent surgery to have the cyst removed. It weighed in at 50 pounds. "The technical diagnosis: it was a mucinous cystadenoma. It is a benign condition," Dr. Jones
said.
Now that the giant growth has been lifted from her body, a weight has been lifted from her shoulders.
"As soon as I got home and was able to move a little, I tried every shirt I had on and it was awesome," Rahn said."This dress I have on, I actually have not been able to wear in a year."
Don't look at the article if you don't want to see a cyst larger than the average watermelon
aye that's a big ass cyst
how the fuck are people such pushovers that they would sooner grow a watermelon in their stomach before insisting that their doctor do some more tests
We had something similar to this arrive when I was at work, but it was about 47ish pounds.
How frequently have you been through our healthcare system? Doctors are quick to dismiss or refer. They have too many patients to focus on something they believe to be harmless. I'm not saying its right, but it's a perfect example of how fucked our healthcare system is. Unless you make a huge fuss, conditions can go undiagnosed for years before being treated.
The doctor at our local hospital initially told my sister that the large painful area in her abdomen was just constipation and that she should take some laxatives. Turns out it was actually a cancerous ovarian tumor and we had wasted two weeks trying to fix the constipation.
There are fantastic medical professionals in this country. Unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of them. Healthcare in America suffers not only from a messed-up insurance and pharmaceutical industry; but from a lack of talent and people willing to go through everything medical school entails. The doctor shortage is something nobody seems to be talking about but pretty soon we're going to be seeing hospitals closing because there aren't enough qualified staff to work them.
Imagine me, a plucky little sophomore in high school a few years ago when I went to a specialist my doctor recommended because of what I thought was a large pimple on my lower back.
Turned out it was a pilonidal cyst, and my insistence that it wasn't anything serious almost cost me the use of both of my legs, the doctor told me that in his tenure as a surgeon he'd never seen a pilonidal cyst get so close to the spinal column.
Get your medical shit checked, folks.
Jecyst Christ, how do you not notice such a thing?
Because some things can't be seen from the outside
