The homeless rates are getting crazy, just about every underpass has a tent where I live
I've been to Brighton recently and I saw more homeless people sleeping about on the sidewalks of busy streets more often than I thought. It was honestly depressing to see such a thriving town have a homelessness problem of such a degree.
I've lived in and around Brighton all my life and although there have always been people sleeping rough it now appears worse than it's ever been.
Where I live has gone from bad to worse with homelessness. Austerity means leaving the poor to rot while the rich keep up their parties and yatch-buying, complaining about how we have no money to be squeezed out of.
Even in Norwich (which is considered a ~liberal hellhole~ for Norfolk last I checked as we consistently have Labour MPs) in the last few years I've seen the number of rough sleepers spike dramatically. This is a relatively stable city, or at least it was. Now a lot of public spaces are temporary homes for the homeless until someone complains about them.
Austerity does not work, fucking two years olds could probably tell you that. We should not be treating national economies like a rainy day fund, you have to spend money to encourage growth not cut services and reduce spending.
I'm just outside Newcastle, and even here I see the odd one or two.
There are quite a lot of homeless people in Nottingham, it's definitely gotten worse in the last few years.
Watch as the Maybot now campaigns to leave the UN.
Pfffffft, that would require a spine.
Eastbourne and can confirm, the amount of homeless living under the pier is sad really
they'll probably just shrug it off like the US of FREEDOM did.
Chesterfield has a surprising number of homelese people around these days, plenty of people I know who are struggling too. Of course this is a problem that won't go away because of a UN inspection/report - removal of the tumour that is the current government would be needed as a step towards this.
lazy good for nothings not pulling up their bootstraps
Homeless rate is increasing here in AUS aswell.
It was rare you'd see a homeless person 20 years ago but it seems their numbers are increasing and i'm genuinely unsure as to the why?
If its anything like here the government as succeeded in convincing most people that people who rely on benefits (ie the poorest members of society) are also doing the most damage to the economy, so cuts are made constantly to the benefits system so that "freeloaders" can't abuse the system.
Its all bullshit made to redirect peoples anger at wealth inequality from the upper classes to the very lowest. So the safety net is destroyed and the people who need the support the most fall right through into homelessness.
What's really surprising is that austerity has failed completely to slow the growth of our defecit and national debt. Austerity is a failed policy.
But rather than recognise that, the solution is always more austerity. And that's because the goals of the people perpetuating austerity was never about any of those things, but about profiting from the destruction of socialised services etc.
Of course, corruption and emoluments are the only explanations for why Eton-educated and similarly highly trained members of Government have not checked themselves and decided they need to take a different course. Theresa May has personally profited from the PFI system through her husband, whose company fucked up the Olympics to the point that the military had to stand in at great cost to the UK. Many current Conservatives also profit from any privatisation within the NHS. It's just one of many reasons to vote the Conservative party out of all office; most of them are in it for personal gain even if it requires stamping down the whole fabric of the country to get it.
I hope they screw this government to the fucking wall.
Ironically the Tory government's attacks on the welfare state encourage the exact kind of behaviour they claim to be trying to stamp out.
The only viable way for many poor people to use the benefits system is to accept that this tiny month sum is their lot and make no attempt to gain employment.
"The safety net" is completely gone.
If you get a job, you sign off of the system. If you quit or lose this job ever there is a 6 month waiting period sanction (a literal punishment for getting fired) that starts on the date of the end of employment before you can receive a payment.
Now, lots of unskilled jobs in my area have a massive amount of staff turn over (usually because they are exploiting apprenticeship schemes and probational periods to avoid ever having to pay staff the full minimum wage.)
So if I was on the dole, got a job in subway, and got fired on the last day of my probational period - I now have to find some magical way to pay my bills, my rent, and to feed myself for the next 6 months before the so called safety net is ready to catch me.
No fucking shit homelessness has almost tripled under the Tories. What landlord would allow a tenant to stay rent free for 6 months before they can get back on the dole?
By the time you are able to receive welfare again, you wont have a fixed address from which to apply. Welcome to Homelessness! Have fun trying to escape that nasty little trap!
The conservative government has turned the welfare state from a safety net for the most vulnerable- into a system that aims to alter the behaviour of the poor via application of suffering.
