So this is just something that's always bugged me.
My parents are HUUUUUGE Doctor Who fans, having watched the originals when they aired, and actually having VHS home recordings of some of the episodes that were originally lost (none of the still-unrecovered episodes though, so nothing valuable in that regard).
And they always pronounce "Dalek" with an 'r' in it, "DARR-Lek".
Whereas the way it's spelled, and in this video, pronounces it with an 'h' in it, "DAHH-Lek."
Does anyone know which pronunciation is correct? My intuition suggests the latter, but my parents are infinitely more familiar with the series than I am, so I'm not comfortable just downright disagreeing with them, without any evidence.
It's dah-lek. There's no r in it. It can sometimes sound like Darlek when some characters say the word but that's entirely an accent thing, they're not actually pronouncing a r.
If your parents have American accents they shouldn't be making a r sound at all.
I have always pronounced it Darr-lek
I've heard both pronunciations in the show so I guess both are correct in a way.
Also the comment section for the video is great.
I think you meant to say that the comment section is EXTERMI-GREAT.
It's dah-lek (or dah-lik). The confusion comes from the fact that we Brits tend not to pronounce our syllable-final r sounds unless there's a vowel at the start of the next syllable, and because we use that long, broad 'ahh' sound (the same that we use in 'father' or, more relevantly, 'car'), some people, particularly Americans who are almost exclusively rhotic, assume that it's pronounced with an r at the end.
okay i'm all for wacky character design but
at a point you gotta put your love for a show past you when one of your advanced war machine villians is a bunch of glued together microphone parts
is everything in doctor who as stupid as this?
An interesting paradox about Daleks that I noticed is them repeatedly saying that "they have no concept of elegance" even though in order to say that phrase one does need to have a concept of elegance.
In reality they should be saying "what is elegance?"
the lifeform itsself does not make sense that dinky little thing cannot enter a building at a fast enough pace let alone exterminate a populace with its nipple cannons
I mean that's being pedantic really, since you know what it's talking about when it says it has no concept of elegance.
The second one of them can see someone, it can kill them without any trouble, they're capable of withstanding a lot of punishment, so their durability comes into play should they encounter any resistance, humans ain't got shit on them.
I know you think the look of them is weird but that doesn't say shit about their combat capabilities.
Daleks aren't scary.
What do you base this on?
In what way would you personally redesign their appearance?
I would imagine Who-fans out of everyone to have a harder time changing something about their show than others. Changing an actor throws you guys into a shit fit lol
like did you honestly try and convince me those upside down trash cans are scary
God forbid an alien race actually look alien.
Doctor Who in general is riddled with really retarded ass issues. As a Science fiction concept it is arguably brilliant and possessing limitless potential but it gets constantly ruined by the execution with some notable exceptions.
Honestly if that's the whole idea of the show then I might be interested. Is it like Trek but with stupid and weird ideas?
To be honest I've always seen it as a soap/saga type show, which is what turns me off of it.
It is a show where the lead character is recast every few years, the monsters reworked ever decade or so and the theme rearranged slightly every other series. If the fans had issues with change it wouldn't have lasted as long as it as done. Of all the fandoms who could have issues with change I dare say the Doctor Who fans are probably more willing to embrace it than many others.
All changing their appearance would accomplish would be a rather pissed off fan base. This isn't Star Trek where the Klingons have different looks in like 4 of the series.
Changing their look would need to be handled with extreme care. You can't give them a humanoid look as the Cybermen already exist so that leaves us with a restyling of their current look. I assume you would propose a more modern look and less of a 60's "I raided our garden shed" look.
Personally, I like their look. Yeah it's a bit corny at this point but it's unique and consistent.
They could get rid of the metal nipples everywhere and make them look like creepier chaotic metallic abominations, they could also make their guns look more menacing and speed them up as well as making it unnecessary for them to yell exterminate every time they fire their weapons.
It definitely is something they have built up for themselves over the years; and has become iconic. So I'm not proposing changing everything up, honestly just change them so it doesn't look like they're rolling on a mobility scooter every where they go. Maybe also make the bottom a little slimmer.
Them saying "EXTERMINATE" is core to their character. Removing that would be treason.
I mean I guess they're cool in the sense they are something that looks so utterly stupid but you fear it anyway. I can see why you wouldn't want to change it.
Oh I'm not entirely opposed to an update on their look but it's would need to be done carefully and I have no idea how I would do it. They really are the way they are because there are people inside moving all the bits around.
Or is it necessarily? I think that them silently murdering everything could be just as scary, only saying exterminate as the initial command for example, it would allow for way more room for the suspense to build up.
You gotta remember that Daleks are basically 60's sci-fi monsters (they first appeared in the second ever serial of Dr Who) so they're gonna look dated and silly compared to sci-fi monsters today.
I am pretty sure that Daleks are supposed to be one of the scariest races in Dr Who and they are not even menacing at the moment, they mostly come off as being annoying or comical than threatening.
They managed to make the weeping angels creepy, they managed to make the vashta nerada reasonably creepy, but the main villain in the game is not menacing at all for some reason.
Nah, it's gotta stay.
Well, personally, I base it on the fact that they're adorable.
