But shielding 500 people is an unbearable burden?
Today's zeitgeist towards immigrants and refugees is baffling.
>500 refugees
Boo-fucking-hoo. I wish other countries would actually step up to help those in need instead of relying on some countries to carry the burden.
Bunch of fucking cunts. A majority of the other developed nations in the world have taken in more than a thousand refugees from conflicts ranging to the Syrian Civil War to the warlords of Africa, and you can't even take in 500 refugees from one of the biggest humanitarian crisis in modern times in the form of the Yemeni Civil War? What is it with East Asian countries and extreme xenophobia...
What the fuck is it with humans and completely losing their shit at the mere thought of showing basic decency and empathy towards people trying to escape from a terrible situation?
And everyone suddenly remembers how xenophobic East Asia can be.
This didn't surprise me one bit. You can find a lot of racism in Japan, Korea, and China, and it doesn't help Korea that they're ethnically homogenous and highly conservative, which amplifies the resulting xenophobia.
Probably the source of the xenophobia as well. Very easy to say "We've been doing great as we are, why should we change?"
Everyone like to think their country is a black box shielded from the rest of the world.
They probably see the state of europe and dont want it happening to them. Plus, realistically how many of these refugees will even return home when the war is over? Why should people be forced to take them in? Sure people are allowed to call them out for ignoring a crisis of human lives but its important to look into both sides. Yemen is fucking miles away from south korea and there is plenty more welcoming places in between, why go there?
I know some people are talking about this being "recent" but many developed East Asian countries want nothing to do with immigrants and have for a very long time.
If people knew there was a plan, like eventually sending them home after the war is over, then people would be more open to helping them as it is seen as short-term.
It's because not all people that arrive in a country are fleeing from a war. Some of them just lie their way through. And people need to be suspicious about these kinds of people. And if they just want to flee from a war they can go to some of the neighbor countries where no war is happening. In countries like Germany many arrive that aren't fleeing from a war but they say they do because it's easier to get asylum and benefits.
Doesn't seem that surprising to me. A lot of Asian countries in general are pretty racist, especially older folk in those countries.
Don't speak the language, get looked down at.
Now lets add them having nothing because they had to flee their country and they are even less welcome.
The overall negative news about the refugee crisis doesn't help either.
What do you mean by "state of Europe"
We're doing fine.
The ridiculous state of the migrant crisis says otherwise. Its basically just a gold rush for free permanent residency and other perks. Look at Calais on a daily basis, look at Germany.
What exactly am I supposed to "look at". That's exactly the terminology Trump uses in his rhetoric, without being able to point at concrete sources.
A "gold rush of free permanent residency and other perks" is pretty disingenuous too considering they're mostly living in temporary housing all concentrated into one place. It's a surprise that the crime numbers for German immigrants coming from the crisis is roughly equal to the rate at which German natives cause crime (especially considering how foreigners are more likely to be reported for crimes than natives)
Not dismiss your claim outright, but ill point out that a lot of neighboring countries can be in bad states themselves or swamped already
For many South Koreans, Europe simply provides a cautionary tale.
“Look at Germany and Sweden,” said Heo Jin-a, a resident of Jeju, which has a
population of about 600,000. “Those countries that accepted refugees
experienced heinous crimes. I’m worried such things can happen in our
neighbourhoods.”
This is why tabloids should have been banned, the lies have spread so far that the people thinks they are real. Seriously, every single bad news have been overblown to unsuspected limits.
Unfortunately it's not just East Asia, we're seeing how pretty much every nation has no interest in welcoming immigrants
Refugees. Immigrants define those who come to live in a country permanently.
Those seeking asylum are always only temporary until the situation improves and they can otherwise be sent back to help in the rebuilding effort.
Though refugees can permanently immigrate.
My uncle escaped the iranian revolution and now permanently lives in the UK after originally arriving there as a refugee.
Most common folk don't know or care about this distinction
Italy is mirroring the US and racists are now showing themselves publicly. They are the basest, and I'm sure they too would like to stop Migrants, refugees and asylees altogether
Korea spent several periods of history as vassals of other countries and cultures. They pretty much hate everybody and if there wasn't a shitton of bombs and guns pointed at them they'd hate the US too.
I don't know what I think about immigration and asylum seekers anymore.
My sympathy wains every time I hear about girls in my area being raped by recent immigrants and having them spit on the floor when I walk by here, I'm typically from Scotland where there isn't so much of a percentage but it's much higher down here so this is a new first hand experience when I originally would have said everyone is welcome, I'm now starting to lean towards vetting and a "families only" approach.
My heart goes out to the good people caught up in the fighting, however the vast majority who cross borders haven't even heard the gunshots of war before they skipped town and headed for greener pastures.
I'm getting the impression that they arrive with the mindset of changing us, they really don't give a fuck about us or our culture for the most part, there is no integration that I have seen.
I honestly can't blame the South Korean people after living where I do, my sympathy for the refugees fleeing from war, but I'm afraid these people have ALOT of making up to do, they take entry for granted and are abusing the system in literally every way with no thought to the society their are entering. They are giving a bad name to the Muslims that have lived and prospered alongside us here for decades, it's those guys I truly feel sorry for.
Isn't it weird how everyone will point at Muslims, wether Indian or not, who have lived and grown up here for generations as proof refugees and immigrants will be fine but magically ignore when they're not?
Its almost as if they've become citizens or something
