Reminder, if you already own this on Steam you get it for free.
WHY IS IT 31GB. The base game was 8GB, short of really going for it with remastering the textures or just not compressing the FMVs how has it nearly gone up 5 times in size.
I seriously can't tell the difference, granted I haven't played the original since I beat when it came out but still, a video of what they improved would have been nice.
Maybe this is why it's a new release
probably uncompressed audio

wow, I thought it was switching to the remaster at 0:39 until I saw the labels, the new landscape looks terrible
huh wow, they really did improve the textures in some areas.
Subtle improvements but appreciated improvements nonetheless. I like the new sparkly/shiny looking ground in some areas whenever an explosion happens.
What happened to videogames
Where did all the physics go
A surprising amount of texture reworking in there actually. I can kinda see how it would be closer to 31GB now, on top of almost certainly uncompressed audio or FMVs.
They were sacrificed at the alter of realistic graphics.
How things move are more important than how they look. Everyone is retarded.
its sad we have such stasis in a medium that can be so dynamic
Wonder if now you can honk your horn.
Fallout 4 (heck I think Fallout 3 and New Vegas as well) have parallax decals.
A fair few games parallax their bullet holes now because it's a really cheap effect that looks good.
None of them do it to the degree that FEAR did if I remember correctly. That game shot for the moon with its effects.
I'm hoping this revives the multiplayer. Shit was fun.
why not both
FEAR was just pioneering rapid interior renovation techniques. Why mount cupboards on the walls when a small bullet can make a hole to store things in for you!
i can't get past the first part of the game with out it crashing
Man I'm so glad for this. This is a game I play through at least once every couple of years - and I really appreciate the improvements made to it. The god awful compressed voice/dialogue audio is no more! And the subtle graphical improvements make a world of difference... to me, anyway.
DICE is still leading the whole GPU physics though. The BFV alpha showed off their physics particle system that allowed snowflakes to travel with the wind and up and over banks/trees/buildings. Also your character traces in snow behind them when moving, same with vehicles, so if you run into a building from outside, snow will actually collect inside the house. Add on their new destruction that is also physics based and it looks very 👌.

The graphical fidelity is amazing and blew me away when looking close up.
Also, let's not forget Siege's whole main gimmick of destructible environments. Blowing out holes in walls to act as improvised turrets, taking out entire walls chunks at a time, etc.
Really, it's less physics going to the wayside, and more devs only incorporating the more creative and impressive displays of physics if it benefits the core of the gameplay, or if the concept is based around that idea.
I mean, it makes sense. Why waste precious resources on crazy procedural destruction techniques if they won't benefit the gameplay at all?
I am to this day mad that just cause didn't adapt geoengine starting from 2

So pretty much this :V
This reminds me of The Division, which had some truly astonishing destruction tech, which went completely to waste because it was more or less irrelevant to normal gameplay.

Would have been cool if they tweaked Geomod a bit to make it more robust.
It's a really nice update. The game looks great, the improvements are subtle enough that you won't be distracted by how different the game looks, but in side by side comparisons the update is lightyears ahead of the original.
Broken stuff stays around longer and I've noticed collapsing buildings seem much more likely to settle rather than just falling through the ground like they used to. Every smokestack I've knocked down has hit the ground as a single piece and stayed that way, it looks really awesome when they smash through buildings now.
