Groups of young people have clashed with French police in Nantes after a 22-year-old man was shot dead by an officer during a police check.
Cars were burned, petrol bombs were thrown, a shopping centre was set alight and a library and several buildings were damaged in the Breil neighbourhood in the early hours of Wednesday.
Rioting is pretty much a French pastime.
Still, it sounds like the guy (intentionally or not) ran over a police officer which prompted the shooting. Given the history it's not surprising an officer might think a fellow officer being run over is a deliberate attack and immediately shoot.
You learn something new everyday.
I knew the french people were passionate about topics but not violent.
We always have riots when police brutality/killing happens in poor districts, whether the cops or the suspects are in the wrong.
Most rioters are just young assholes who see this as a perfect opportunity to smash and burn shit.
Just like the London riots, there are assholes in every country
I always find French riots to be pretty retarded. Teens in the banlieues are pissed at the police again. What do they do? They destroy the private property (shops and cars) of random people living in their poor suburban neighborhood, making their own living conditions even worse.
Huh. I thought we, as americans, had a monopoly on cops shooting people during traffic stops
Imagine if America blew up like France every time it happened.
Either the shootings would stop, or the US would become a Mad Max zone in a decade
The only way police shootings will stop happening is if criminals in their current form stop existing, or police in their current form stop existing.
pissed? ha, fat chance. they're just opportunists.
Or we fix the bad neighborhoods and give better funding towards education and train/pay cops more to deal with situations.
“Hahahaha- no” said any government.
You know, I'm not trying to advocate for violence against police, but I wish rioters would pick their targets better. Why attack random vehicles and businesses? Go for courthouses, departments and squad cars if you insist on destroying property. Be consistent. It's like demanding a refund at Hohls because they forgot your fries at Burger King.
Yeah, that honestly sounds less clear cut than the time an officer raped someone with their baton.
Nah the Brits have a monopoly on that.
See: The reason the American Revolution gained any traction
Yeah, seems like a pretty universal thing
Wasn't that more of united France revolting against their government?
