Children are sent to Quran school, women are threatened if they do not cover their whole body, and an increasing number of Muslims are encouraged by Salafists to harass people who do not follow Sharia-law.
These are all tendencies growing in Sweden right now.
"The violent Salafist groups have grown ten-fold within the last 10 years" says Magnus Ranstorp, who is an investigative leader concerning terrorism at the Swedish defense academi.
Salafism is an extremist branch within Islam that believe in Sharia. Salafist groups commit violence against non-Salafist who are, in their eyes, unclean.
Magnus Ranstorp is behind a survery that, for the first time, attempts to map the Salafist movement in Sweden.
After many interviews with Salafists and more than 70 police officers who work with extremism in Sweden, can investigators now conclude that Salafism is rising in Sweden. A development that has prompted warnings from experts about serious consequences.
"The ideology of Salafism is in itself anti-democratic, homophobic, against Shia-Muslims, and attempts to control women. In many ways is it anathema to our democratic society" says Magnus Ranstorp.
It is unclear just how many Salafists are in Sweden today, but according to the Salafists themselves, there are more than ten thousand.
According to Magnus Ranstorp, the Swedish government has paid too little attention to the issue:
"All the police officers we talked to created an indication that Salafism influences their local communities."
The Swedish Salafists are in contact with foreign Salafists - who are outlawed in Germany - and the German group has operated in streets and squares in small Swedish towns.
While the government hasn't paid enough attention to the Swedish Salafists, their (the Salafists) economic support from the Arabic world has increased.
Every year the Salafist groups receive millions of crowns from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Because of this, Magnus Ranstorp believes the Swedish government and its politicians need to become better at tackling the issue.
"It has been difficult to talk about these issues in Sweden, but our democracy can only become better and healthier if we have a public debate about Islam and the growing Salafist movement."
The survey has garnered much attention in Sweden, where many now debate how best to tackle the issue of Salafism.
The researchers emphasise, however, that Salafism continues to only make up a small minority within Sunni-Islam, and does not represent the majority of Muslims who live in Sweden.
Sorry if this has been posted in the wrong section.
sweden's way of tackling anything related to muslims is to stick their heads in the sand to avoid being branded bigots. heaven forbid we actually do something about a group such as the salafists who are not in any remote way compatible with the standards of sweden. no, let's just let them be instead and let them prosper, we can't treat those poor muslims fairly now can we. and if you believe im going after the muslim population specifically you are dead wrong. i want sweden to stop being such pansies about things and start dealing with things as they should be dealt, and for every person who asks "Oh why are the right-wing growing so much" well here's one of your answers.
Saudi Arabia seem to have a huge conversion agenda for Europe, they invest ridiculous amounts of money in bringing books and missions and a lot of it is very violent teachings.
Call me a nut but I don't think the Saudi agenda will let up if the new leader doesn't disagree with this policy.
The right wing nuts are feeding off of his, their numbers are growing the more problems happen around the continent. I'm unfortunately seeing a violent conclusion to this situation in the coming decades.
I hate when people use religion for violence and control, all it does is makes you hate those people.
This is probably why anti-immigration and the right wing are starting to surge in Sweden.
It started to surge ever since we've become way too open without the proper structures to address segregation and integration. The current government is very passive regarding these issues. They recently passed a budget proposal to divert more funds to municipalities in order to help integrating immigrants and their children.
And of course there aren't any numbers. I wouldn't really trust the salsafist's claim that there are over 10 thousands of them, and that their numbers have grown ten fold doesn't really mean much.
And of course they spend more time trying to get us outraged than they do actually linking the study.
... no? SD, a center-right party and until recently the only party that adressed the immigration problem, had ~6% of the votes in 2010, ~13% in 2014 and preliminary polling for 2018 shows 23-36%. They’ve doubled in support each election year. That’s a rise, and a HUGE one at that.
I think he's saying that the increased Salafism is a response to the increase in anti-immigrant and xenophobic policies.
If that's the case I strongly disagree, this isn't coming out of victimization.
It's coming out of a doomsday deathcult which goals are world domination.
It sounds so ridiculous, it is ridiculous.
im glad you know how all religious groups work. please tell me more about religious groups in sweden who are so woefully oppressed. oh right theyre not, theyre given enormous lease and funding to the point where it actually is a detriment to native swedish citizens. and guess what. i am a refugee from bosnia in -92 and i have swedish citizenship. these newcomers could stand to learn from past immigrants and refugees.
We have outrage and "politically correct" society to thank for this. Governments and their people are too afraid to say enough is enough when it comes to toxic groups and do very little to attempt to prevent or remedy these problems other than appeasement, which never works.
