I really hate this idea that refugees somehow don't deserve services, offering scholarships to refugees gives them a chance to start rebuilding their lives.
It's almost like they'd prefer immigrants to be layabouts on handouts instead of doing something productive.
Refugees aren't immigrants. Refugees are in the country temporarily until their home returns to a livable situation
Ah "jog on", the slightly more polite way to tell people to fuck off. Perfect choice of words.
In theory yes, practically how soon are countries like Syria going to return to a liveable situation? And once someone's been in a country for (say) 10 years, as an integrated citizen, does it make sense to force them to return at that point anyway?
wow jog on that's why it's good to be british. the insults penetrate you within.
I don't disagree with giving scholarships to refugees, so long as they qualify to the same degree or equivalent as domestic or international students. Do they? There's probably not much point in giving a scholarship to someone who can't do much with it, for example. I would love to say they do, but that's me making an assumption.
But there are many poor british people that want to attend university but cannot afford it? Why do they not get offered the scholarships?
Because Uni. of Reading is making a business decision that the good PR resulting from this will ultimately lead to higher profits in the long run. This remains to be seen.
Already had that for years https://twitter.com/UniofReading/status/1014164007903748096?s=17
Hey, finally my University is in the news for something good!
the same people screaming "immigrants are a leech on society" are opposed to helping them contribute to society
Well otherwise they would be wrong!
To be fair university in Britain isn't like college in America, the debt is there but you're not throwing your entire future away with it. Most people who take out student loans assume they'll never pay them back, and the poorer you are the more money you get in loans and in bursaries you don't ever need to pay back. The difference here is refugees can't claim student loans through the government, so something like this is a pretty big deal for them!
It's similar in Canada, each province does it slightly differently but most of them have either low or no interest, and university is significantly cheaper here than the US
We haven't had to live through our homes being a literal war zone, see our family members be killed by insurgents, and had to uproot our entire lives and move to a country where a significant portion of the population are actively hostile towards us. Don't criticise the educators for offering an act of chairty, crticise the government for making education so expensive in the first place.
