Hello, I've recently discovered a fairly new small community in Garry's Mod who are passionate about making "maps" in GMOD without the use of Hammer and I wanted to bring light to it because to me it's very interesting and I'd love to see more from them as well as contribute as much as I can. https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791461906633 Making maps with Hammer can be very tedious, but if it was as intuitive as building in Garry's Mod was, it'd be a whole different story. But who said you have to use Hammer? Using the plethora of assets on the workshop and a few tools like Wiremod you can achieve a lot. From small scenes with sound effects added in to create a nice atmosphere to over the top action flicks. Survival missions with working enemy waves and tiered weapon crates? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1125918885 Sure, do it, you have the tools. A multi-part story based in the HL2 universe? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1416647499 Sure, why not. Platforming levels with makeshift zipline and climbing mechanics done using only Wiremod? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGKd6jlWMpo&feature=youtu.be You bet. With enough time and effort you could probably fool someone into thinking something was actually made with Hammer. But alas, there are limitations. As you can see in the video right after climbing or ziplining the camera jerks around in a random direction. This is something to do with seats and how the camera moves on exiting them. Wanna make NPCs talk and walk around somewhere ala a scripted_sequence? Too bad, the tools don't exist. Want to use a model's existing animations to make pre-baked sequences? Too bad, the only tool that lets you use prop_dynamic with Wiremod doesn't work with saves. But even without these things, you can do some stuff that could be considered pretty amazing for being just a Garry's mod save. It's a fun little passtime and I hope I got at least 1 person interested in this because it is a neat little thing to check out. The "map" in the video is my own. Discovering this small community once again sparked my interest in trying to make something like this and motivated me to finish it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1436191748
That's called scenebuilding ya know.
In a sense you are building a scene yeah, but scenebuilding in the gmod scene as I know it is just for screenshots and nothing else.
It doesnt have to be.
the most apparent issue I can think of is optimization. it's possible to do that by controlling which props appear when already, but for a consistent, lag free experience, it's probably a good idea to try to convert a map in hammer after concepting it in GMod.
I'd be making maps in Hammer if it wasn't such a piece of ancient shit. So GMOD will have to do until S&box or something similar comes around.
After I looked the recordings of S&Box it doesnt look different than gmod. Good maybe the graphics are improved and the engine changed but the concept stays the same I guess.
There's an addon that allows you to use GMod and Hammer simultaneously, so any props or lights you add in the map in GMod will be added to the VMF in Hammer in real time. I forget what it's called, but this is probably the closest you'll be able to get to making the Hammer experience more friendly overall.
