Well, my province WAS stupid enough to elect Trump Lite, so this comes as no surprise. And as is always the case in Ontario, Conservatives serve one term and are then kicked out on their asses when people come to their collective senses. Cue another ten years of Liberals.
What gets me is that Ford's campaign was full of horseshit, he just promised this and that without explaining HOW it'd actually get done.
I think he won because Wynne did a bad job, and a buncha short-sighted moderates voted against her, instead of for Ford. Now we get all the fun and stupidity that comes with electing a populist.
That's precisely what it was. I know my parents voted for Ford specifically to spite Wynne.
You do realize that for 40 years the Conservatives ran the province with no real challengers, and were only defeated by a Liberal-NDP coalition, correct? You also know that the last Conservative Premier, Mike Harris, served 2 consecutive terms, correct?
Just because you don't like the party doesn't mean you can spout bullshit about them.
How long ago was that, exactly? Look, I've only been in Canada from 2003 onwards. As long as I've been in the country, the Liberals have held Ontario. 2003 - 2018 is pretty significant a stretch. Which says something, considering that Ontario kept voting Conservative for federal elections until Trudeau took office. Not liking the party is one thing. But when they field quality candidates like Doug Ford, it's pretty safe to assume he's not going to last - at least given the sensibilities of the Ontarians I've lived and worked with for fifteen years.
From the article:
Proper names for body parts and genitals are taught in Grade 1, which is
a change child-abuse investigators had long urged. The concept of
same-sex relationships is introduced in Grade 3. In Grade 4 students
learn about online safety as well as puberty.
Really fucked up then. This is going against expert advice and opinion for moral high ground purposes.
Wynne lost because she pulled left and alienated the centre voters, who then went Conservative because they were tired of her trying to court NDP votes, or just stayed home. The Liberals are supposed to be a relatively centrist party, and I hope their crushing defeat brings them back to that and away from the identity politics bullshit and wasteful spending of the McWynnety era. I could also just as easily assert that Wynne only won in the first place because Hudak was terrible at campaigning, given how early polls were predicting a landslide Conservative victory last election as well.
As for what era it was that the Conservatives ran Ontario, it was from 1943-1985, and the last Conservative government was from 1995-2003, with Mike Harris winning 2 consecutive majorities.
It still proves my point that Conservative governments in Ontario haven't just been "one and done" as you stated they were. You shouldn't let political bias lead you into making objectively false statements.
Whether Ford lasts depends very strongly on how the Liberals attempt to rebuild their party. Whenever the first by-election happens, it's going to be both a test of support for Ford and a test of the Liberal party's restructuring efforts. Frankly, in order to gain any support next election, the Liberals need to pull to the right a fair bit, given how far left they pulled under Wynne especially. If they don't, Ontario will likely find itself as a 2-party province, with the fight being between the Conservatives and NDP, because if the Liberals end up pulling farther left from this instead of back right towards the centre then there won't be enough difference between them and the NDP for people to bother voting for the weaker party.
“We are very happy to see the radical sex curriculum repealed,” Jim Hughes, national president of the Campaign Life Coalition, which opposes abortion rights.
Hughes expressed hope that the “ideological agenda” of former Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne, an openly gay first minister, would be “scrapped completely.”
lol holy shit.
how can one pray the gay away if there are gay ministers?
You misunderstand what a minister is in this case.
It'll be cool when people stop treating transgender people as subhuman deviants that only exist as political pawns.
Whenever that happens.
yes yes I did. I blame reading at 1:30 am.
Fuck, this is what's going to happen next year in Alberta when the rednecks elect Jason Kenney isn't it? Although he's probably even worse because he wants schools to out kids who join gay straight alliances to parents.
Sounds like the same group of people that wants to prevent access to abortions also wants to encourage teenage pregnancy.
Remind me again, lifers, is this about fetuses or about getting women back in the kitchen?
pretending we don't exist doesn't make us go away but it will make us louder
This is why you don't give an inch to conservatives, you can try to use half measures to ease them in but they'll just abuse that and repeal any sort of progress you make.
In my opinion, failing to discuss gender identity issues in school directly causes deaths, because a lot of kids are going to be suicidally depressed because of their gender dysphoria that they don't even know exists. Literally just telling children "trans people exist, this is how they work, and it's okay to be that way" directly saves lives and you have to be a real sack of shit to think that's a bad idea.
You realize this is the same mentality many conservatives have about liberals, yes? And that this kind of hyper-partisan paranoia about "the other party" is what's fuelling the massive ideological divides and radicalization we're seeing today, yes?
You do already forget they lost their official party status to 7 seats and beating down to 3rd place first time for their party and Ontario politics?
And I don't feel likely they will returned their former glory until if they got new leader to get party back to majority.
The thing you quoted reminded me that the courts here ruled that abortion is protected by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. So I have no idea what a coalition against abortion hopes to accomplish in Canada
This rhetoric assumes "both sides" are actually of equal merit, and yeah I get that "both sides" do this kind of thing. But the solution isn't inherently in the middle. And what constitutes "radical" left these days is pretty normal leftist politics in europe and the right here is far right fascism.
So a flagrant disregard for due process in the court system because of an ideologically-motivated disliking of the outcome of a trial is normal for left-wing politics? Because the Liberals' new laws dealing with sexual assault trials are just that. Motivated by a disdain for the fact that Gian Ghomeshi was found not guilty for sexual assault because his 3 accusers were found to be conspiring about what to say and committed perjury, the Liberals are re-writing the laws on what evidence is permitted to be presented at a sexual assault trial, and demanding the prosecution be given the right to review everything the defence is going to be submitting beforehand, then banning the defence from submitting any new evidence, thus allowing the accuser to tailor their responses to the defence's statement of defence.
Or how about a medically dangerous violation of one's right against unreasonable search and seizure? Because the new laws about drunk driving do exactly that, by allowing medically-untrained police officers to demand motorists provide blood samples for intoxication testing without having to have any just cause to believe they're intoxicated.
Ass-backwards and potentially oppressive legislation isn't something that's exclusive to the ideology you don't like.
And if you legitimately think that repealing a sexual education curriculum is fascism, then you need to take a step back and look up the meaning of the word.
I mean sure but this is sort of silly, it's pretty easy to tell if someone is over the legal limit just by seeing/smelling them already. Not sure why they'd need blood tests, isn't breathalyzers what's used for that?
You're right, it's just one step of a whole lot of other steps, but i'd rather call it for what it is now before waiting until we're (US in my case) just another turkey
I don't know anything about that case about Gian so I won't comment about that.
It is definitely dumb as hell and very harmful.
"“We’re going to be moving very swiftly with our consultations and I will
be sharing with your our process in the weeks to come,” said Thompson,
promising the Tories would be “respecting parents” when a new curriculum
is developed, possibly in time for the 2019-20 school year."
new curriculum
possibly in time for the 2019-20 school year.
People are wilfully ignoring this part of the article and treating this as if they're not going to update the curriculum after this.
I'll be honest, I never bothered looking at the sex ed curriculum because I don't have kids, so it's something that doesn't affect me in the slightest, so I don't really know what all was so controversial other than some parents think kids are learning about sex and masturbation too young, and the religious nuts just hate all of it because "Abstinence is all you need and the gays are evil." But frankly I expect they're still going to have the things about consent, gay marriage, and sexting/online whatever in the new thing, they're just probably going to move any actual talk about sex into high school.
