Why does Rust use so much RAM? Even with 16GB it still slows down my computer. Hell, I can exit rust and my computer will chug for about five minutes before it finally recovers. Why the hell does this game require so much memory usage? Can't it be optimized?
I only have a GTX 770 and an i5, so my rig is pretty outdated, but I built it years back. I had to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of memory just to PLAY Rust without extreme problems. Now, I can play rust at a solid 60FPS on the first two or three low graphics settings, but it still eats up my memory like nothing else. No other game comes even close to this amount of memory usage. Here's a SS of my rig.
Any tips on lowering the memory usage of RUST? I mean, I love to dual-task, I enjoy alt tabbing and doing other things while waiting for bullshit like crafting timers or the night cycle, so having my computer run at a snail's pace is just a massive downside. Again, nothing, no game comes even close to this level of inefficiency. Could it be because I installed Rust on my SSD somehow?

My rig is similar to yours, except that I have only 8 GB of RAM. It's always been enough to play Rust at 60 FPS on "Beautiful" settings, though it becomes a bit short when I'm hosting my Rust server at the same time. Are you sure Rust is using that much memory? Maybe try to lower some of the in-game settings like view distances and such.
I often see people talking about this RAM issue, I just don't know anymore if my PC is somehow blessed by Garry or if I adjusted just the right settings.
Honestly you don't have the gear to go dual tasking with Rust. Take up knitting or something therapeutic.
Yeah shut down all the background stuff you aren't using including stuff like creative cloud.
You can also every few minutes go F1 "global.free"
Always do your housecleaning - clean your registry, defrag, do your MEM checks, all those things we tend to forget doing because we are playing Rust....
Even if you're dual-tasking, Rust shouldn't use 10 GB of memory or anything close. Is that what it said in the Task Manager? There's definitely some cleaning up to do, changing settings. Maybe there's a memory leak that can be avoided?
Also I think the amount of RAM needed increases with the size of the server you're on. It could become an issue if you're playing on a map size of 7000 or 8000.
I play on Rusteros, which is an average-or-smaller server. The way I check my memory usage is just by checking Task Manager or the globa.perf command in-game. It shouldn't be using that much memory, and I cant' tell why. Of course, I checked to see if it was an issue on my end, but nothing else comes close to that amount. A memory leak is a good thought; usually when I launch it the memory is 7500-8500, but rapidly climbs up. I believe I had the same results on an Official, too. My current settings are minimum everything, save view distance, which is max. I also tend to play in a 1600x1024 resolution, windowed. Fullscreen impacts my performance more (I could do 1920x1080 but eh).
Yeah, I could probably do with a good defrag, but my HDD is and SSD are relatively new and I don't do a whole lot of downloading or file hoarding. I don't really want to use the global.free command, because it freezes the game for a solid 30 seconds which is bloody inconvenient.
Well, I actually use Firefox, but same thing. I actually play the game usually on the lowest of every setting, with view distance at max; even at mid-range settings I still get 60fps, but sometimes it spikes down and then goes back up, so I'd rather not deal with that. I don't really care about the graphics anyways, I'll play the game in absolute shite graphics if it meant I got ten extra FPS.
But thanks for the replies, guys. I guess I will do a defrag and all that. I recently used MemTest86 and my RAM is fine, so who knows? Maybe because my OS is so old (feels weird to call Windows 7 old.)
I can definitely imagine that Rust would run better on Windows 10, that could be part of the issue.
Otherwise view distances could be the culprit, don't hesitate to turn them significantly down and see if it makes your memory more stable; at least I'm 100% positive it will make the game run better.
Yeah. Framerate really is fine, its just irritating to have so much memory hogged. I guess I could, but its a damn shame; - When rust reset its graphics options recently and stuck me at 500 view distance, I couldn't see air drops unless I was right close, so that's a bunch of shite.
There are separate view distances; you should probably lower the one for grass rendering distance, it helps a lot.
The most I have seen rust use is 12GB. And it has done that a few times now even on official servers. But I do have 32GB of memory so this isn't an issue for me.
