Before anybody goes lol dumbass had it coming", she was swimming with Nursing Sharks which is probably the most docile species of shark you can find. They can't even truly bite you because their teeth are very similar to our molar teeth, they just clamp down and 'vacuum' whatever they can't fit in their mouth. Just unlucky that this happened, basically.
With Nurse sharks she wasn't in any real danger, there's never actually been a reported fatality that I could find attributed to Nursing Sharks because they can't bite hard enough to do any real serious damage.
Out of all recorded shark attacks where the species could be identified, nurse sharks are actually the 4th most commonly implicated species. It's largely because of incidents like this where people are lulled into a false sense of security by their sedentary nature. At the end of the day they're still wild animals and when you invade their resting spots, don't be surprised if they express their displeasure in the only way they know how to.
Yeah these guys don't normally attack people, but like most animals they will bite if they feel threatened. The headlines kinda want to make her appear like some random dumb Instagram person who jumped into a pool of sharks, but the context is sort of important here.
Nurse shark attacks are quite common, but there have never been any recorded fatalities: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/ee190be4-d184-48e3-a4bb-f09f46cfbfb5/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.29.16.png The data were taken from the Global Shark Attack File. The latest version of the log records 6307 attacks, 99 of which involved a nurse shark. There's a single fatality but identification of the shark was questionable. Pretty much half of the attacks were provoked, with case notes stating that the victim was either feeding sharks, grabbed a shark's tail, or was spearfishing sharks.
Glad she took it like a champ and doesn't blame the shark for doing shark things
Actually this log is fucking incredible. Filtering for provoked incidents throws up some real gems: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/243e7e05-dea3-483e-b90e-e4d69bc0bdba/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.55.04.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/6d9ad81e-3c5d-4fb8-9c42-323b04144ad8/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.53.34.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/1c08d958-b55f-48dc-81b2-1b310f76cf28/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.50.00.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/8da6cfd4-893d-4ad0-b98d-feabde3faf4e/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.50.56.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/56a980cb-c74e-4b4e-9606-9234a607fb9d/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.47.15.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/878/88643a3f-1fc4-4c97-a84d-e7b97aa9a09b/Screen Shot 2018-07-13 at 22.46.11.png
Here's another shark attack tracking site https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/ For anyone who's curious about these things
Apparently sharks live by Hammurabi's code. Slap a shark on the tail, get your leg bitten off. GG.
I got mine from this site https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/shark-attacks/. Think it's sourcing off the same info
"fell onto dead shark"
Well while its harmless, its still pretty dumb to do it for likes
Reminder that sharks, even Great Whites, have really only one method for interacting with the world and identifying what things are -- with their mouth. Sharks have two kinds of bite, a curiosity bite when they just nibble to see what something is (this is still very injurious to humans and anything else alive), and a kill bite which is when they really get in there. Many attacks on humans are just curious sharks taking a nibble to see what this weird pink splashy thing is. And then you have the dude who slaps a shark on the ass and gets instant karma.
Finally, a species of shark that can give hickies
You're in the sea and this human male slaps your gf's tail, what do you do?
bite his fuckin leg off
Good for that first shark. Sharks won't stand for sexual harassment
but they dont stand regardless
Jesus christ that last one just needs a "florida man" at the start and its an amazing headline
What are you gonna do, stab me?
