Half of young people in the UK would like to own an electric car – compared with just a quarter of their parents, a survey suggests.
The research comes from motoring group the AA, which says myths about electric vehicles are putting off many drivers.
This matters because cleaning up air pollution and tackling climate change both depend on mass acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs).
Young people seem to be more accepting of the technology than older people.
But too many still hold needless fears, the AA says.
...
The opinions were revealed in an AA/Populus poll of 10,293 drivers.
What the public thinks
85% of people overall in the survey said that there aren’t enough public charging points for EVs.
76% said EVs can’t go far enough on a single charge.
76% think EVs are too expensive.
67% think EVs take too long to charge.
67% think there isn’t enough choice of models

I just want a car tbh
Pickups aren't very popular in the UK. There's a few companies working on both hybrid and pure EV pickups though.
I can kinda see why. Electric cars have come a long way in not a long time, barring any unforeseen emergency I'd rather not replace my current car with anything non electric.
I wouldn't mind an electric vehicle as long as it didn't look like ass, feel like ass, and drive like ass...
...and if I had the money for it
I love that how when I see a thread tangentially related to Elon Musk, you're always the one to post it. :p Not criticising, as I'm a big SpaceX fanboy, but still, it's slightly amusing to me.
In terms of the actual OP, I'm surprised it's only half of young people. Electric cars are ideal. My only criticism of them is that burning gas to make power to charge an electric car is very inefficient due to thermodynamics inducing huge amounts of heat and energy loss when converting the power to charge a car. I think electric cars will be more useful in terms of combating Climate Change when we're using more hydroelectric, solar, wind and geothermal energy.
Those main reasons I don't want an electric car yet, I prefer smaller cars (think mini/Swift kinda small) and most of the smaller electric cars look like either *THE FUTURE* or trendy hipster rubbish.
I would like to get one eventually though, petrol prices are a ripoff and only getting worse.
Tbh i think electric cars are just a stepping stone, imo better public transit is the future
I’m not considering one now because the options, especially here in Australia, are extremely limited. If I wanted an electric car, I’d have to get either a boring Nissan Leaf, or be on a waiting list for several years for an expensive, tasteless looking Tesla.
If Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot or Renault put out an affordable, fun and elegant electric car, then yeah I’d consider it. But we just aren’t there yet. Also there’s still the matter that the way batteries for electric cars are manufactured at the moment is rather bad for the environment - so when it comes time for me to get an electric car, I’d hope that battery manufacturing has improved by then.
Public transportation is physically impossible where I live right now. If I want to take a bus I have to drive 20 minutes to a bus station, then get dropped off in the city, and then get on a city bus or walk. There's not really options for transportation outside the downtown area which is probably like 80% of households and occupations.
Public transportation doesn't exist in the Houston metro area
christ the electric problems on an alfa are bad enough as is, a purely electric alfa would be an absolute nightmare
i'd prefer to keep my 5 cylinder than drive a soulless Tesla
I love not having a car payment, I love insurance being $17 a month, I love being able to fix it for pennies on the dollar with basic hand tools, and I love the sweet six part symphony coming out from under my hood.
No EV for me thanks. Not that I could afford one even if I did want one...
I want an EV because gas is expensive and electricity is dirt cheap here
I wouldn't mind an EV for commuting - not like highway driving is much fun when it's bumper to bumper 80% of the time. But I'll always be a tinkerer and I'll always want my ICE cars for pleasure driving.
Gotta love people putting their ICE boners over everyone else
If you want all of civilization to efficiently rely on public transportation, you're effectively asking the entire world to urbanize. You can not have efficient public transportation in rural/suburban areas.
I live in an area where there are no sidewalks. You have to drive to go from A to B. Yes, there is a bus stop that's actually quite close to my house, but because of the area, and how far away most people live from one, and how far away retail establishments are, it's just too inefficient. It ain't worth it.
When I lived in the city? You could walk where you needed to go. Had a job that was a borough away? Taking a bus and a train wasn't far fetched.
Ideally, I'd love for public transportation to work all around. But when you live in an area where you've a mile distance between your home and the next market place, you can't expect public transportation to be worthwhile.
It feels like every second car in Australia is a ute.. so the market would definitely be there..
And this has to do with the article because???
less article, more-so discussion in this thread
as long as you keep your EV/Musk boner away from me, I think letting people drive what they want to drive is just fine
If that were true there would be no need of EV's to begin with. I have no "EV boner", just a "wants to keep living on a liveable planet" boner. I know, crazy
Well you'll be glad to know that all those manufactures are working pretty hard on EVs now.
Personally I'm of the opinion that people are never going to do something just because it's good for the environment. No one likes public transport, people use it because it makes financial sense to do so, very very few use it because it's good for the environment. I think EVs allow us to tackle climate change and air quality issues in such a way that people will actually adopt them.
EVs can be a lot of fun with the low centre of gravity and instant power.
Public transport always has been and always will be absolute ass. No one in their right mind will pick public transport over their own car if they can help it.
But it certainly isnt fun to look at them or be inside them.
Evem the model X looks awful. Saw one yday in person, looked like a small cave. Why is it so big?
At it's current state in many places, yes
Because it's an American SUV. Model 3 is certainly more size appropriate for Europe. I disagree entirely on the fun part.

You can't improve it if it's a fundamentally uncomfortable idea. I don't like having to be in a crowded bus/train/tram, I just tolerate it because I need to be somewhere. And public transport will always be crowded because other people also need to be somewhere
proper public transport doesn't mean crowded though, hell it could even be individual
