Hello everybody.
I want to buy a new laptop to play PS2 emulator.
Ideally below $800.
It needs to run PS2 emulator at least 60fps at native resolution.
I didnt follow laptop news recently, so I thought it wpuld be a good idea to ask here for general standards.
What's the best I can get for $800?
Thanks in advance.
But Gamecube would not run on my old Intel Integrated Graphic because it requires OpenGL 2, which is not supported by integrated chip.
Perhaps things has changed.
What are the best models for that price bracket? If possible, I want to crank up the emulator resolution to 3x or 4x native.
Just wanted to get the general idea on the pricing, to avoid being scalped. Right now I'm in a peculiar area of the country, they might marked up the price wildly. If I cant find one with similar spec here with the price you guys gave, I'll find one later when I return to my hometown.
If it serves as a reference I could run a couple of PS2 and Gamecube games on a i5 6200u with a 940M, anything with a HQ/H on the cpu should be good enough
Try looking for some Dell laptops, the Inspiron 15/G5 and G7 should do nice, no idea about the price there tho
A laptop with a Ryzen/Vega APU would probably be your best bet!
I see.
I saw some ?Asus laptops with i5, but with older Nvidia gpu, for $500, Cant remember the model of the gpu. Is that the price for it?
Cant find anything newer than that here.
I'll go and confirm the model once the shop opened again today.
I have checked
Its Lenovo Ideapad 330
Intel Core i5 8th gen
Radeon Graphic. (model not written)
What i5 8th gen exactly?
I think the 8250u/ i7 8550u is about as good as the old i5 6300hq/7300hq right? Ive seen se geekbench scores and they score about the same
Yeah the i5 8250 is a U variant, I just compared it to the i5 6300HQ
How about this?

I just want to point out that PS2 emulation is actually pretty brutal. You should go for CPU power over GPU power. Some games run fine, but other games are extremely demanding, and other games don't run properly no matter how good your system is.
Thank you guys, these should serve as rough reference points. I guess I will wait until I return to mailand to get a wider choices for laptops. The Lenovo one was the best they got here it seems.
The only reason I don't want to get an actual PS2, is because they tends to severely scratches game disc, because of their design flaw. The disc reader ribbon bent out of shape, and touches the CDs. I thought it was an isolated case, but after 2 PS2 and some internet reviews, I don't want to risk losing more CDs.
Thank you again
You could try getting a Fat PS2 and the HDD Adapter
There's the official one for IDE HDD's and a unofficial one for SATA ones
Honestly, this is the best option IMO. PS2 emulation has massively improved over the years, but it still pretty unpredictable, especially if you start going for lesser known/niche games.
Most games will run just fine off the HDD, and you have no emulation bugs or snafus. Get a component cable and games will look much better.
Even though PS2 emulation is improved, I agree with the above post mentioning to just get an OG PS2. There are probably a lot of them still around in/out Malaysia and possibly cheap-ish as well. You need a very good CPU for PS2 emulation. Even a good one struggles with certain titles.
There's also certain exclusive series like Ratchet and Clank that rely on enough specific hardware shit that they just don't emulate to a usage level at all.
