A really good read. Posting it here because it touches a lot on China's ambitions with these projects.
Countries should not be accepting chinese projects like that, you end up in a pile of debt with no escape.
God, what an ugly thing to build in such a beautiful place.
Especially the part were they have to use chinese workers. Basically propping up their workforce. It would be one thing if this was a national project at home but clearly bad when it's abroad.
Nothing ever ends well when dealing with china in something involving money, I honestly don't know why anyone would think working with them is a good idea given how many existing examples of projects fucking over everyone involved.
That's the point, you can't pay it back and now you're in debt to China. And China might be asking for a few favors in the coming years. They built your infrastructure and you can't pay, so what ground do you have to deny them? They want a deal, or a mine, or a naval base; you better give it to them, because you owe them.
