https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSeuXYwI-KY A pretty interesting take on the beginning of Prey and how it directs players. Though his gloo gun and melee strategy that he struggled with seems more like a problem of him being stubborn, rather than the game pushing you to use that tactic. Personally I found the gloo gun pretty terrible for combat and that rushing mimics and phantoms with the wrench is much more effective. Also I think he's greatly over estimating how quickly habits form. The reason people tried to use the wand they were just given in his game is because video game convention is to give you a tool with a simple use for the tool, then follow it with a slightly more complex use for that tool, and optionally a third more complex task to ensure you understand the tool's use. Giving a player a tool and immediately asking them to use a different tool is poor design, not an issue with the players.
Pretty solid video on him breaking down the mechanics and systems Prey used which made it a fantastic and underrated game.
But goo + wrench = instakills with most enemies if you have the right nueromods due to it being crit hits.
yeah i think it also subtly teaches the player to not fight everything. it just lets you get a bit too comfortable with doing so before saying "haha fuck you you can't do this" which means a lot of players will throw themselves into a situation over and over till they succeed and later get back the ability to do so easily through neuromods. the game plays like it should've been amazing, it just feels a little off in a lot of places. a rebalancing mod down the road could make it straight amazing, i'm sure.
I dunno, I think it plays just fine, but it is skewed more to specialized runs, rather than having a jack of all trades player. Sure, a true, fully upgraded Morgan is incredibly powerful, but specializing early on can make some of the early tough encounters much easier to handle. And fortunately, most strategies are viable, so you really can play your own way
