At a White House meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. (1800 GMT), the chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, Kevin Brady, may also get a chance to urge Trump to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the escalating Sino-American trade dispute. A White House official confirmed that possible new tax legislation would be on the agenda of the meeting. Aides at the Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax and trade policy, did not respond to requests for comment about the meeting. Trump and congressional Republicans have hailed the deep tax cuts passed in December as critical to U.S. economic growth, though Democrats have called them a giveaway to corporations and the wealthy that will run up deficits for years to come. Ways and Means Republicans are pursuing a legislative package, dubbed “tax reform 2.0,” that would make permanent $1.1 trillion in tax cuts for individuals, families and private businesses that were approved on a temporary basis in December. Those cuts are set to expire in 2025. Trump has also said he is considering cutting the U.S. corporate income tax rate to 20 percent from 21 percent. The new House legislation is seen as an attempt to appeal to Republican voters ahead of the Nov. 6 mid-term election in which Democrats are seeking to seize control of Congress from Trump’s party. Many Republican House incumbents are on the defensive against Democrats. The Senate, however, is unlikely to take up a new tax bill before the election. In last year’s tax overhaul, Trump and Republicans in Congress slashed the corporate rate from 35 percent. Brady said last year’s corporate tax cut sets the stage for other countries to respond with new tax cuts of their own that lawmakers may have to match. “We agree with the president that we should be prepared, depending on what our competitors do,” Brady told reporters. But Brady added, “For the president and Republicans, making the family and small business cuts permanent is the centerpiece of 2.0.” Brady has said he expects to unveil a proposal before the House leaves for August campaigning on July 26, with votes on it before the election.
what a good day to be a machine shop shareholder
running off with as many valuables as they can stuff into their pockets before they're caught
Trump's and the GOP's legacy will be about as bad as it can possibly be. If not outright treasonous and treaded like Confederates they will be remembered for fucking up the US for decades with tax cuts, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh.
This is great, the last cuts increased the median wage by -1.4% last I heard. Cant wait for more CEOs to line their pockets.
Nice, now that big daddy Trump declared poverty in the United States to be over, what's the most sensible action? Tax cuts; nice.
Aren't we already in a spending deficit? Jesus roller-blading Christ, they're so cartoonishly, obviously malevolent and self-serving it hurts. I'd almost bet money that this is a plot to distract people from something, seeing as the last tax-cuts went over super well with his fan-base.
Makes sense, actually. Put the tax cuts in place now so they can afford the lawyers later on.
The tax "cuts" represent the only policy that had a plurality of public support. This sudden announcement is laughably transparent. On the back of a week of shockingly bad news for the traitors in the GOP, they are becoming desperate. This announcement does two things for them: 1) It allows them to try to shift the news cycle towards an issue that they perceived as a "win." 2) It offers promises of even bigger handouts to their corporate backers, which will result in more dark money flowing into their campaigns.
Democrats will be the ones that will have to fix this, taking time and political capital away from actually important domestic policy, and then Republicans will scream how Dems are raising taxes. People will believe them and they'll get back into power and continue to cut taxes and cut social programs, while not fixing the debt anyways.
Gotta squeeze one more out before Mr. Don's Wild Ride is over
Another tax cut and Kavanaugh, what a lovely parting gift from the GOP as it detonates after Trump is gone.
keep focusing on russia guys ignore the fact that the gop has been pushing for this end result for the last few decades at least.
Assuming the GOP doesn't collapse entirely when the full measure of their complicity in Trump's treason comes to light, it will be decades before they recover and find themselves in any position of power in government. Might as well loot the government one last time while they're at it.
There is every possibility that the GOP will succeed. Yesterday, Donald Trump committed Treason, becoming the only US President in history to openly side against the country he owes allegiance to with a hostile foreign nation that is actively attacking us. The G OP feigned "deep concern." Today, they've already moved on, and so has their voterbase. Whatever Mueller turns up is going to be a lot more complicated and detailed that what occurred on live television yesterday. If naked Treason on public display isn't enough, then nothing is while the GOP maintains power.
we have the BEST deficits
when was the last time the federal government raised the income tax on either corporations or individuals? the ACA only raised certain taxes but in terms of percentages the rich and corporate pay much less today even while we have massive deficits than ever before yet we keep trying to go lower every time there's a republican congress and president
2018: Less taxes 2019: No more taxes
