I'm pretty sure that's literally what the Republicans want, or at least part of why they've played along with Trump. Compared to Trump, Mitt Romney is a fucking saint, but at the time of his election he was absolutely destroyed due to how terrible he, and the Republican party, came across.
Now the new norm is Trump-level crazy, and even Democrats are begging for even Mike Pence instead of him; Mike fucking Pence. This is not good for American politics, and democracy in general.
