A measure that would divide California into three parts will not appear on the ballot in November, the state supreme court decided Wednesday.
The justices ordered the secretary of state not to put the ballot initiative before voters, saying significant questions have been raised about its validity. The court will now consider the
merits of a challenge brought by an environmental group.
The Planning and Conservation League argues that dividing the nation’s most populous state into three would drastically change California’s government structure beyond what can be
accomplished through a ballot initiative.
The venture capitalist Tim Draper, who has spent more than $1.7m supporting the initiative, has said it would be inappropriate for the court to block it from going before voters.
Neither side immediately responded to requests for comment on the court’s ruling.
The initiative, which could appear on a future ballot if the court ultimately rules in its favor, seeks to divide the state into northern California, California and southern California. Its
supporters argue the state has become ungovernable because of its size, wealth disparities and geographic diversity.

Now taht's just rude, California. You shouldn't go around killing people just because they're billionaires.
Oh no, what a shame...
Thank goodness.
some part of me thinks that they are trying to do this so they can own Beach property witch they can't do because its illegal do
idk rich people just piss me off sometimes
This isn't actually dead, just off the ballot this time so the judges have time to go over the case and put out a real ruling.
Is there a chance it will be put back on the ballot after the judges look it over before November?

i read a theory about this proposition once somewhere, and it basically talked about how this proposition was actually a political play so that the traditionally republican sections of california would be able to become states on their own and thus have more pull on the elections because of their electoral college thingies, whereas the traditionally democratic sections of california are either overpowered by their republican counterparts, or don't have enough delegates to have pull.
this is the election map from 2016

and this is how they proposed to split california

as you can see, "northern california" and "southern california" would contain more red districts than blue districts, and "california" wouldn't have enough people to have enough influence on the electoral colleges.
as a democrat myself, i'm very glad this won't be going through just yet.
How many people live in northern or southern california compared to one of the less crowded states?
I feel the only real answer to that argument is to get rid of the voting districts, each vote should count for 1.
I'm getting genuinly depressed about what these billionare nobles think they are entitled to do with their money and our governments, this was one of the more egregious examples where he essentially bought his way to the ballot over the objection of everybody
I don't buy it. The major cities have the vast majority of people. So while "California" is small, it also contains LA County which has over 10 million people in it, alone. That makes it right around the 10th most populous state.
Those northern red areas are also very sparsely populated. The San Francisco area would easily pull "Northern California" to the Democrats as well.
The southern area would be the only with a chance to go Republican, but even that would be a bit of a stretch.
That's literally exactly the intention. Neuter the Democratic party pretty much permanently by chopping up a stronghold state.
If they're going to break up Cali, they ought to break up Texas as well.
Look at your map again, there's heavy blue areas in all 3 new states. If anything this would actually significantly increase Democrat power. Maybe Northern California would turn red, but I think all 3 would actually be majority Democrat.
More smaller rural states equals more Senators and Electors for Republicans, since you get extra for free.
