• Macron aide caught beating protesters

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44883583 French prosecutors are investigating a senior presidential aide, who attacked protesters in Paris while wearing a police visor. Alexandre Benalla, an assistant to President Emmanuel Macron's chief of staff, was filmed targeting a woman and a man during May Day protests. He was caught on video by a student activist and left the scene once challenged on camera. He was identified from the video by French newspaper Le Monde. A presidential spokesman said Mr Benalla had been given permission to attend the disturbance as an observer on his day off. Other photographs show him wearing a police armband. Paris prosecutors announced on Thursday they were opening a preliminary investigation into the alleged assault. Possible charges include violence by a public official, pretending to be a policeman and the illegal use of police insignia. On the day of the protests, Mr Macron took to Twitter, vowing that those responsible for violence would be "identified and held accountable for their actions". The tweet has received renewed attention in light of the accusations against his employee. Opposition MPs have called for far stronger action to be taken against the presidential official. Socialist Olivier Faure complained of double standards, arguing that there was one form of justice for regular people, and another for the presidency. Saw the video a while ago, I did find it odd how this dude was much more aggressive and unprofessional than the rest of riot police. Guess that explains it.
What a fucking dipshit
I imagine he'll get the sack.
Even if he does, it will obviously be damage control on Macron's part rather than actually being fair and just. They obviously knew about the incident pretty early on given that they suspended him for two weeks in May, yet they kept it on the down low hoping that no one would notice. Prosecution only became aware and started working on it once they were made aware of it by the media, who recognized the aggressor. Macron may like to get on his high horse and guarantee that everyone who commits violence will be prosecuted, but in practice he'll protect his buddies if they are guilty of doing the very same thing. If he sacks him now, that will only show that he's sorry for being caught, not sorry that it happened. His "firm but fair" act fools no one.
I'll admit that if doing the right thing will cost you your close aide and raise an instant scandal, it's pretty tempting to just hope nobody will notice even if you prefer justice
I'm sure it's tempting to commit tax fraud if you have the wealth and power to get away with it, too. Should we forgive those people as well? No respect for hypocrites.
Choosing to commit a crime and choosing not to turn in your subordinate for a crime you disapprove of and which harms your image are two completely different situations. I'm not saying he should be forgiven either, he is guilty of hypocrisy and should face consequences. My point is that it's a tough choice and on some level I can empathize. If I didn't know better I'd think you're deliberately trying to misunderstand me
I don't see how that's so tough a choice really. I guess you have a different set of ethics.
He's been sacked and charged with a load of offences https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44917421
Mr Macron had described the incident as "unacceptable" and promised there would be "no impunity". Yeah, right. Fuck off with that shit. The French presidency has been accused of being aware of the incident for some time, trying to cover it up, and failing to act swiftly against Mr Benalla. Good. Let's get to the bottom of this.
From what I heard, many facebook posts about the scandal were mysteriously deleted, and now the government and their supporters are blaming the media for "hounding on them". Yup, sound like fascism to me.
I wouldn't trust hearsay on these matters, frankly. Do you have a source on that?
The sad thing is that the alternative was Marine Le Pen, who may as well have been waving a flag with a swastika on it rather than the Fleur de Lis. Settling for lesser evils may be necessary, but it sure doesn't feel good.
Yeah, we might have more choice than other countries but ultimately this is politics and it always come down to picking the least bad...
Yea, Sadly not really much different from Marine Le Pen and her party.
«Come up and get me» macron to his government collaborators yesterday at the house of latin america yesterday evening http://m.leparisien.fr/politique/macron-mobilise-ses-troupes-a-la-maison-de-l-amerique-latine-24-07-2018-7832187.php Macron admits to all responsibility in private speech, «answers to france directly» from the safety of a no-medias meeting with his closest collaborators. This is the same guy who has been snubbing the investigation commission at assembly for a straight week now. Is it time to come up and get him yet?
What a fucking stupid hill to die on. Seems to me this Benalla is more than a simple henchman to him.

After failing to belittle the events of may day, Benalla turns to crocodile tears ahead of court appearance on more than 5 charges, with the last to date being unlawful access of personal data to temper with criminal evidence. every single LREM Croney who flew to his defense will have to recuse themselves
Also LREM parliament members are actively trying to sabotage the work of the independent investigation commission.
