In the 12 months to March, 443,000 crimes resulted in a charge or summons out of 4.6 million offences - the lowest detection rate since 2015.
Data also shows police closed nearly half (48%) of all cases because no suspect could be identified.
It comes as new figures show the number of homicides has increased for the fourth year running.
The Home Office statistics on crime outcomes are published at the same time as quarterly crime figures and the Crime Survey for England and Wales, which is based on people's experiences of crime.
The changing picture of how successfully police are catching criminals comes against a backdrop of rising crime.
Overall, crimes recorded by police went up 11% in the year to March, figures published by the Office for National Statistics suggested.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the same in Scotland. I was assaulted and despite giving the police the name and address of the offender it took them over a month to arrest him and even then he was only given an ASBO despite a long list of previous offences.
We should probably cut funding to the police, they're obviously not worth paying for.
That's one ineffective police state
Police states have always been about political and corporate interests. That's why when Antifa smashes a $100 window they get years in prison but white collar crime which can steal tens of
thousands is a slap on the wrist.
i imagine it has something to do with misallocation of police resources. You know, if they weren't out hunting down dangerous butter knives and taking them off the street they'd have more time for catching actual criminals.
A life of crime is looking more and more tempting.
Don't say that, Hezzy is watching!
Fp is a police state

this is old shit but my god, you can't make this up when they decide bike wheels are dangerous enough to classify as "weapons"
So if you only commit 9 crimes and stop there, you're guaranteed not to be caught
Funding is only part of the problem, it's more that criminals barely get punished in the UK, particularly if it's a first offence they just get a slap on the wrist, assuming they get caught anyway, which for things like burglary is fairly uncommon.
Then you have the motorbike gangs which the police often don't even bother chase for fear of hurting them, it's no wonder crime is on the rise when the risk and consequences are so little.
if it was russia they'd drive an apc through the house and flatten half of the block as collateral
at least they put that Scotch guy Dankula to the sword, limited time and resources spent very very well.
Yeah, England put way too much money into trying Dankula. It was really a huge misuse of England's funds.
Part of that is also that those offences are really easy to prosecute - you catch someone with something and it's pretty cut and dry. From what I've heard from interviews with detectives, they just don't have the resources to properly deal with more complicated offences like sexual assault because they come in faster than they can process them with the manpower they have. This leaves them being closed because they can't get enough evidence together to prosecute.
Wow, what a great and proportional response that would have been, right? Killing drunk people.
If this was Canada they'd have brought tims and lured them down.
I suppose we should go around and kill people that break the law then, right? I mean they're not exactly a boon for the area.
Should put those Helicopters to use and just smack 'em off the roof with the nose of it, that'd do the trick.
Austerity, everyone.
Only going to get worse from here.
So 90% of crimes don't even end with a charge, let alone calling it "sovled", but they still have enough time in the day to arrest and charge an average of 9 people *a day* for mean words on the internet, Danukla style.
When did things get so fucking backwards.
Police states rarely care about actual crime fighting, the policing is political and a high crime rate helps keep the populous in line.
I know its just a book, but crime with the people is rampant in 1984 for example, nobody cares and they dont have representation so why bother.
Shooting people like that isn’t a proportional response at all, let’s not be silly here.
