PORTLAND, Ore. — The owners of a Portland food cart located near the Occupy ICE PDX camp announced they are closing the business due threats and verbal attacks by protesters.
Julie and Scott Hakes, owners of The Happy Camper Food and Coffee Bar, say they no longer feel safe in the neighborhood after their daughter, who works at the cart, was repeatedly threatened. They plan to sell the cart.
What a weird thing to do
Sounds fishy. Wouldn't the police be called first ?
“Unfortunately, over the last month, we have been threatened and verbally attacked for not backing the immigration agenda at the DHS location and wanting to stay neutral and serve all who are hungry,” said a post on the cart’s Facebook page. “We tried repeatedly to try to work out peaceful solutions with the organizations and individuals protesting, but it all came back to being told almost daily to either support the anti-DHS agenda or suffer the consequences.”
That is a good way to get people to sympathize with your cause.
I guess you could say the protesters weren't happy campers
Plus, if they really want to punish a business for having ANYTHING to do with ICE employees, then just don't give them your money
Hey you know what sounds like a great idea? Getting more people to sympathize with the actual fascists by attacking people who haven’t done anything wrong!
More like a version of "beat them at their own game" by becoming more fascist than actual fascists.
Okay, sure the protesters are being dumb here, but if you side with the people they're protesting because of this, you're an idiot
I'm siding with the food cart.
Yeah, it is one of those things where I can say I'm 110% against what ICE is doing and on the same token I can say the protesters are assholes for treating someone the way they did.
What is happening shouldn't be happening.
If you think yelling at a Foodcart business is somehow more fascist than kidnapping children and putting them in camps then you're deluded beyond belief
Oh you.
I often think a lot of these protesters do more harm to their central cause than help. It's why I wish the SJWs would dissipate into the ether even though I'm pretty left wing.
I’m not, but let’s not pretend there aren’t people who would use this as ammo for propaganda like Fox News, which will undoubtedly reach their vast audience and galvanize them into believing they’re in the right.
Isn't the advantage of food carts is that they're able to move around?
From what I've heard, it can vary. For instance, I heard from someone from NYC recently that when you set up a food cart there, you register it to a designated space. That's your space that no one else can use, and by the same token you have to set up shop at that space and nowhere else. Could be a similar situation here, though from what the guy was telling me it's because NYC in particular takes food carts very seriously over stuff like food safety and such.
Food cart bubble busted about a year and half ago in Portland. I highly doubt this is the only reason why they are closing. If they couldn't pack up and move to a new location then it's because that cart was either loosing money or barley breaking even to begin with. Judging by the picture of their "cart" they went with a static stall. That doesn't help at all, food cart locations live and die quickly. You need to be able to adapt, and the easiest way for a cart is to pack up and move to greener pastures, I mean that's the main advantage over a brick and mortar.
I have to agree with the guy saying this sounds fishy. If there's one thing Portland loves, it's food carts, especially the people you'd see at these protests.
I wouldn't be surprised if some local alt-right douchebags posed as protesters to fuck with the food cart.
Can't they just move the cart instead of closing and selling?
No protestors, No! The food cart was innocent!
Yes and No. Usually you have to have permits and depending on the city you can only be in a specific area as per the permit.
That does sound like the kind of thing some troglodyte would go brag on /pol/ about.
I'd imagine that they'll be hounded by the protestors.
The police have been instructed by the Portland mayor to not confront ICE protestors at all.
Sounds like he's being pretty disingenuous

So it was a total lie
The funny thing about Facists is nobody believes they are one. These campers sure as hell don't which is what he was referring to. Everyone's a dick in this, except for the food cart owners.
As far as the article goes they only interacted with the mans daughter, who they were mad at because she was selling food to employees at the ICE building. None of the protesters did their own research, the had a reason to be mad but they didn't even know it.
Claiming Nazis are socialist instead of fascist (and therefore left wing) is right wing gaslighting. The Nazis called themselves socialist because it was popular at the time but did not adopt any socialist policies and were outright disdainful for all of the tenants of socialism. Calling Nazis socialist is like calling North Korea a democracy. This has long been historically accepted and the idea that Nazis are left wing is a very recent consequence of the Republican party drifting so far to the right that many of its members will believe anything as long as it fits the left = bad, right = good axiom.
I thought the main benefit of having a food cart/truck was being able to move to a different location.
Not according to the owner 10 days prior.
