UK will not block US from seeking death penalty against British IS 'Beatles'

Good. Fuck em
Normally I'd argue that certain rights are immutable no matter what, but IS are so unforgivably inhumane as it is that they wouldn't even follow that themselves.
"Do unto others", I guess.
Yeah. I'm ardently anti death penalty, but these ISIS guys are often so blatant, with so much evidence against them, that I prefer that they die. Main reason I am ordinarily anti death penalty is the 4% wrongful death rate and how expensive it is.
as well as this the UK is no longer opposing Guantanamo either
They will withhold intelligence from the US if they send them to Guantanamo
But our correspondent said if the pair were sent to the controversial US military prison Guantanamo Bay - where some suspects have been detained for years without trial - the UK would withhold intelligence.
We should use them in a real life televised Hunger Games
Considering Martyrdom is a key part of their belief system I'm sure getting executed by a western government is exactly what they want.
Ehh, what they want doesn't really matter when they're dead.
"But Labour said the UK was abandoning a "principled opposition"."
this bullshit is exactly the opposite of what Labour should be doing to win popular favour against the Tories
Great, the UK government is in support of executing its own citizens.
Remind me again, what does the expensive death penalty achieve? If we kill these two are ISIS going to back off and leave everyone alone?
I would absolutely want someone to kill me if I ever became as much of a monster as them, so do unto others indeed.
Hmm cater to populist bloodlust or actually show backbone and stand by your convictions.
Toughy that one 🤔
Catering to the Tories that are happy for us to extradite anybody to the US, knowing they'll be facing the death penalty, is a waste of time. If they're willing to let that one slip by, they're not going to be ideologically aligned with the rest of Labour as it stands. Killing these fuckers will do nothing, if anything it'll just feed ISIS propaganda more, after all we just killed some of their men. They're either martyrs or examples of how "the western devil" shows no compassion after this. Lock them up and never release them, be the better men. Don't create bad precedence by letting this one case circumvent our normal positions.
"I don't normally support death penalty but..." is just saying you support death penalty
Then you are not really opposed to the death penalty.
You will never win a propaganda war with Islamic extremism, so I don't think we should try anyway.
I don't think in absolutes. I'd rather that my country didn't do it, but I also feel it's unrealistic to force another country to cede to our demands on this issue and explained in my post the reasons for me disliking it ordinarily. Lots of people say that they are against killing somebody, but if you were in a position where somebody was constantly being abused and the police weren't helping, you may adapt to changing circumstances. I am just being realistic and focusing my energies on things that I believe are best worth my time - ISIS members are not one of those.
We can at least try and not give them fuel. Death really isn't a very good threat for people who are already willing to put their lives on the line for a cause after all.
Fine, let me rephrase. I don't support it, but this is a rare time where I wouldn't lose sleep on it even if it happens. It's less outright support and more ambivalence in this case.
We should totally allow them to live for having killed potentially hundreds amirite?
What a fucking retarded argument.
we should totally kill them and inspire other fanatics to seek the same matrydom
I'd honestly rather have them shot and buried in a hole in the middle of the desert. There's no reason to let these guys be remembered for being the Jihadist Beetles, let them be put into the ground and be forgotten to the annals of time
A big part of the controversy here is that this is a pretty major shift in a pretty established British policy and was changed in secret by the foreign secretary without any discussion in parliament. Regardless of your thoughts on the death penalty, changing our stance on its use should have been discussed in parliament.
For the record, I'm quite against this decision. Killing them gives them a martyr and gives fuel to propaganda to inspire more people to join whilst the only thing it achieves is fulfilling some sort of bloodlust.
It does when it elevates them as role models for aspiring terrorists and emboldens them.
There's nothing honourable in spending your whole life in a cell, in comparison. I don't really see the point in giving them the death sentence, unless there are security concerns.
Good, fuck them.
I always felt like those who flee to another country to join terrorist organizations then get captured and jailed are like: "lol k, u got me xD now send me to modern jail and let me leech off taxpayers" is fucking bs.
These cunts deserve no quarter. They know what they have done and they don't care, they even gloat about it.

I'm standing by 'no death penalty' meaning 'NO DEATH PENALTY', if they're still technically UK citizens they should be tried by UK courts.
No, I'm always for the death penalty
Mate, very few statements that people make about their views on reality are absolute. Most of them come with exceptions and clauses attached (even if not explicitly stated). If you want to take an absolute stance on the matter that's fine, but people are also allowed to have an "in between" view on things that isn't one extreme or the other, or have a general outlook on something with some exceptions and clauses attached for exceptional circumstances.
as much as i hate these IS cunts, this sets a pretty bad precedent.
these guys should be tried and sentenced in the UK, as UK citizens, rather than just being extradited to the US where they're guaranteed a death sentence
