Rigging model causes smoothing errors in l4d2, help?

As soon as I add the weapon to a vertex group that is connected to a bone on the armature (I'm using Blender btw), the smoothing breaks on the model in-engine. Any help would be appreciated, if I'm in the wrong forum please let me know.
