Ms Haley began by asking how many students in the room had participated in "own the libs" behaviour online - or trolling and making fun of liberals via social media posts and memes.
Most of the conservative teenagers raised their hand, according to the Hill newspaper, and the room erupted in applause.
"I know that it's fun and that it can feel good, but step back and think about what you're accomplishing when you do this. Are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading?" Ms Haley asked.
"We've all been guilty of it at some point or another, but this kind of speech isn't leadership. It's the exact opposite."
Conservative group Turning Point USA, which hosted the summit, promotes anti-liberal memes on its Facebook page.
I really hope she's being genuine. I have no idea who she is so no clue if she is or not, but there really needs to be a strong push against doing caustic shit just to piss off the other side, especially within conservative parties.
I'll take "Headlines that should've stayed on /pol/ circa 2015" for 500, Alex.
Critics were quick to point out Ms Haley's boss, President Donald
Trump, has frequently lambasted liberals and opponents on social media.
"As soon as she has the same conversation with her boss I'll be impressed," one Twitter user wrote.
To be fair, it's impossible to put a leash on Trump unless you're Vladimir Putin.
It's a good thing to encourage positive debate. We need to restore some semblance of good faith to our political sphere, otherwise things will just get worse.
Nikki Haley tells conservatives to stop trolling a day after Rand Paul defends Trump by saying he's "just trolling"
I feel like Nikki Haley is fighting a force she can't win. Right wing trolling has already become a pandemic. To anti-intellectuals it's a viable debate strategy, akin to the Chewbacca Defense. It doesn't matter whether anyone agrees with what your saying, all that matters is that your opponent looks angry.
Finally, some maturity. If more people could stop with the stupid meme horseshit, then maybe people could take a step back and constructively see just how toxic the administration that they’re supporting really is.
Have not followed her after Ukraine-Russian war, but during those times she was very actively condemning Russian actions and was one of the people who brought initial recognition to MH-17 being shot down by Russia and so on. I don't know her political views, but she's a good person.
It's a good point. I trend towards the conservative side, but I honestly think this applies to both to varying degrees.
The current political culture seems to be running off this idea that if you manage to evoke a negative response from the other side with a meme or something similar, that you've somehow strengthened your point or won an argument, which is dumb. It's incredibly easy to get a rise out of someone online. It also doesn't prove anything.
I think staying on the level and respectful towards someone you disagree with are critical when you're having a legitimate discussion, it's how I was brought up, and how I was taught to do it in every debatey setting I've been involved in. There are some people who are plainly not worth engaging with who's beliefs aren't tolerable (Legitimate Nazis/Fascists, Conspiracy Theorists, etc.) but on the whole, you're always going to get your point across better if you act like an adult and treat others as reasonable adults. At the very least, you're more likely to at least get someone to UNDERSTAND your position, if not agree with it. There are tons of people on FP who post things I don't agree with, but they can at least articulate a point and get me to follow their reasoning, and all it takes is someone not talking down to others, or trying to goad them into a reaction.
It's absolutely embarrassing that it's something as simple as what boils down to the golden rule, something literally every society can or at least could at one point grasp, but people choose to act like shitheads because it gives them a brief rush by "owning" someone.
I think the worst part about the ~owning the libs hahaha!!!~ attitude is that 90% of the time they are also owning themselves.
The idea that an idea is always a good one so long as it upsets your political opponents is fucking insane.
https://twitter.com/adamgarriereal/status/1020768132984688641
but then how will i go deaf to own the libs
I guess we have concrete evidence of the 'Broken clock right twice a day' idiom.
It's not just insane, it's fundamentally anti-democratic. The Republican base has totally rejected calm and collected discussion, debate, and compromise on core political issues. They've abandoned all the values that made our democracy great, in favor of this immature, aggressive, childish sports-team mentality.
There is no "winning" in Democracy without compromising and passing legislation. You don't "win" by blocking healthcare reform, you win by finding a way to hammer out your differences to find a solution that will best benefit the people and the nation at large. Haley can push people to act like, you know, normal fucking adults, but when she voluntarily associates with Trump and McConnell and a clan of psychopathic narcissists who hate the core ideals of our republic, maybe she should reconsider what right she has to tell people to be mature and sensible adults.
telling conservatives to stop owning the libs to own the libs
I have first hand experience with this so fuck that guy. I was near center stage at an hours long metal concert (off-set to the right), and it was fun as fuck. But when I got home I noticed the ringing in my right ear was still louder than it usually is after a show, and many sounds caused physical discomfort. The next day it was still loud, but only in my right ear, my left ear was seemingly fine. Later that week I got an ear infection, I don't know if it was related, but it's one of the few times in my life I've had one; it hurt like hell. Weeks in sound was muffled and high pitched sound caused physical discomfort. 6 months later my hearing was still damaged, I couldn't listen to most of the music I used to enjoy (how ironic) because Cymbols caused discomfort. 9 months later the ringing was going down, but some sounds still caused discomfort, or sounded different. 1 year later the ringing is down ~90 - 95% and I can listen to my favorite music again, with very minor discomfort (at this point it may have been anxiety). Over 2 years later and it's mostly back to normal, there is a feeling of 'emptyness' in that ear that I cannot describe, but the ringing is low and I can enjoy music again.
I consider myself lucky that it went down to where it is now, maybe even down to where it was before. I've heard that if it does not hearl by 6 months, it doesn't heal, and that scared the shit out of me once 6 months passed. The bottom like is protect your fucking hearing.
The culture war gets old pretty fast. "Own the rube" or "own the snob" doesn't work since these ways of life aren't going anywhere.
if someone wants to do something this retarded to piss off the libs we should probably just encourage him
it doesn't sound like she's encouraging anything much like our AG is chanting for extra judicial incarceration.
i'd like to see them go to normal public schools for once though instead of the high school equivalent of liberty university, strange how they're always bemoaning the liberal bastions of college from their paulpits in their sympathetic forums
Speaking as someone who's lived under Nikki Haley's thumb, during her governorship of the financial clusterfuck years:
Nikki Haley is every inch a typical Republican insider. She's only a better class of criminal.
If you've watched House Of Cards, in particular 'the water tower' arc/subplot, you need to understand that is a 100% accurate depiction of South Carolinian politics and norms, just change Frank Underwood's (D) to an (R.)
She comes from a state where there is more genuine competition and fervor within it's own Republican party than the party will every experience from Democratic challengers.
This longstanding attitude of civility and kindness only serve to mollify and wool-over the same policies, attitudes and ideals that Donald Trump and other hard-line Republicans at large espouses. There is nothing moderate, civil or thoughtful about the Republican crops grown in King Cotton's fields.
On another note though, I cannot help but roll my eyes at people being righteously inflamed over the back-slapping and boy's club attitudes of online right-wingers and Alt-Righters "pwning the lefties" when, for more than a decade, the internet was (and still is) almost nothing but a playground of the Left owning the right/christian fundies/etc.
But whatever.
I mean I think the difference here is these lefties never gained any real power inside the democratic party.
This response got me:

Never forget that this whole mess was merely the logical endpoint of the G.I.F.T. and its constant defense of "it's the internet lol".

But that's basically all that modern conservatives have.
Ok sjw
Really good advice, liberals wouldn't be out near in force if they (conservatives) didn't remind us why we hate them everyday. It's why Bush didn't have near the amount of protests Trump does, he knew to keep his mouth shut.
Not saying I support conservatives, but they can be a lot fucking smarter if they tried.
PROTECT YOUR HEAREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEING
of course, trump is such a uniquely hateable figure that it's fairly easy to find footage of republicans trying to own him
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7kwPgHxQac
I do feel like spite is more ingrained into the culture and policies of the republican party. It was present before Trump but it's definitely become much more dominant since.
Had a family member commit suicide because their tinnitus was so severe, so yeah. Hearing protection is not a joke, and fuck that guy.
God I can't even imagine having that for life. It's bad enough when it happens temporarily.
