Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing more than $100,000 while out on bail for charges related to his festival scam, tacking on at least three new felonies to his record.
McFarland pleaded guilty to felony charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and lying to a federal officer in an 11 a.m. appearance before Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald on Thursday, according to the Justice Department. The plea deal carries a federal sentencing recommendation of 135 to 168 months in prison, though he could be sentenced to as many as 75 years under the felony maximums.
McFarland is still awaiting sentencing on two counts of wire fraud stemming from last year's doomed Bahamas music festival, which he pleaded guilty to in March. Before his second arrest, he was expected to serve somewhere between four and eight years, which could be increased due to the new charges. Those charges each carry a maximum of 20 years.
McFarland was re-arrested last month and charged with five felonies, including fraud, money laundering, identity theft, and witness intimidation, after VICE News published an account of his latest scams, which included a company called NYC VIP Access that purported to offer customers access to high-end events like the Met Gala and the Grammys.
What a mad lad. At least people will remember the event lol.
Well, I guess you know what they say:
Live fast, and leave a pretty prison record.
And as the thread title says, 'up to =/= actual punishment'
It might be a few years.
that's what you get when you mess with rich people i guess
75 years? Did he have a gram of weed in his pocket?
It's because he broke the law, got out on bail, then broke the law again.
My favorite thing about the Fyre Festival was that it revealed that rich people must have their own exclusive circles on Twitter since not a damn one of us even heard about it before it happened
they paid to know what its like to be poor
That's my second favorite part.
IIRC the price of the tickets was actually insanely unsustainably low for the stuff that they were said to be getting. The average ticket was a lot cheaper than that ridiculously high number that people kept throwing around (that was probably the most expensive ticket) and most of the people that got fucked over really weren't -that- rich. They're just gullible thinking they can get an all expenses trip to a tropical island including housing, food, and concerts for $4000.
For what it was advertising, it should be more like $20 000 a ticket or more
$4000 for all that is indeed ridiculously low.
i will never forget watching the /mu/ thread on fyre festival as it went down, that was a wonderful day
Yeah they're was this weird stigma that all the people getting tickets were stupid rich, but it's just that the tickets were just stupid low and they couldn't come close to paying for what they we're offering.
Did he have two grams of weed in his pocket?
Didn't internet historian show that most people bought the sub 1000 dollar ticket? The majority of people who went weren't even clpse to rich, and not a single person bought the 20k ticket.
