• [Zero Books] Can Elon Musk Save the World?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8SAPdZw-18 Felt like we needed to do a nice balance after the stunts Tudd pulled and others. Here, have a nice grandpa looking at things from a Socialist/Communist perspective.
I've long suspected that Musk has a messiah complex, and with his recent twitter rants he has only revealed his true nature. Sorry folks, Rocket Jesus won't save you with overpriced cars
probally not, but I still want him to try with spacex and tesla, even if its not him, maybe he can get someone (not directly) who really does care about these things to make changes, or even just get us not being on a single rock in a universe that could get hit by something at any point.
Elon could save my nan from a housefire, I'd still think he was a prick
The problem is he'd develop an overengineered solution and deliver it after the firefighters were already getting her out then call them pedos for good measure. He makes good cars and good rockets, but honestly that whole fiasco shows he's not exactly a good person.
God, this video is so bizzare. The editing is weird an all over the place, the guy is talking about some weird stuff not connected to the topic, and when the question do gets adressed, its done in a way thats detached with the contents of the video and without any elaboration. Also, the way it just shows random bits of films and stock footage throughout is quite unintentionally funny. Why do I feel like this was meant to be some sort of a video about marxist view on ecology or something like that and they just slapped musk on it to be more topical and get more views?
That's a pretty good point there, I mean I think his commitment to making electric cars viable is still useful but it'd be nice if they treated the engineers who make them well.
Slavoj Žižek does this as well and that's because at the core of the problem is that the texts they argue, cite and more are so dense that it takes multiple readings just to get half the picture of what many philosphers of the modern era are talking about. So in this way, they have to break things down into the laymen, thats why the videos take such a weird editting style. On top of that, they are in fact a very far left/communist/socialist focused youtube account so in the same way far right conservative media is fucking bizarre in its stylings. So is left leaning.
Back before Tesla and SpaceX were huge companies he did have more of a hands on role. He didn't build them in his garage or something but he was important to the development of what they are today. It's not like you become rich and can just will massive companies into existence without working hard at it. There's a lot more to building things than turning wrenches.
I don't know about Space X but that couldn't be farther from the truth with Tesla. One of the biggest complaints with Elon is that he would give much appreciated critiques of the designs for the Roadster and then fucking vanish for weeks on end. Elon wasn't even CEO until after the Roadster had started full production long before.
The original founder was ousted because he was terrible at running the company and wanted to offshore battery pack production to Thailand or somewhere iirc. Pre-CEO Elon was basically an investor at that point, to be fair. So I guess you could say his money did help him will it into existence but I don't think it's completely fair to insinuate he doesn't do anything except pay people. SpaceX was his baby though so he was more involved there. I can't say for certain but as far as I'm aware he's still involved in "real work" at SpaceX. Most the business stuff is done by Gwynne Shotwell.
You also have the two patents under his name being designed by engineers within his company as well. I'm not saying the man is lazy, but to act like he's as qualified as the literal rocket scientists he hires is laughable when it comes to designing systems.
I was able to watch the video now. I'm not quite sure about it. It felt like to me it was just trying to paint capitalism as an evil boogyman. I disagree wholeheartedly with the statement that development under capitalism is not to make a better future. Surely there are examples of that being the case with monthly releases of that stupid shit you don't really need. But there's also a case to be be made that capitalism allows for the development of things that otherwise wouldn't through competition. I think this is why he added Elon into the discussion because people often use Tesla and SpaceX as an example of this kind of capitalism. Indeed, I feel like the Falcon 9 is an example of what capitalism can create while it's competition, the ULA is an example of a single monopoly stagnating because there's no desire to improve. On the flip side there are things capitalism is bad at like scientific research that has no obviously profitable use, exploration (that's not for minerals) and providing healthcare. Among other things. I personally believe there's a more nuanced balance than capitalism = bad and socialism = good. They both have pros and cons. I feel like an ideal society would allow capitalist pursuits while having strong social programs that take care of everyone. As far as the environment goes, companies will tear it apart if you let them so we need restrictions on business in that regard. However, a company is a reflection of the people who run it, so the environmental impact of a company can be mitigated if the society has a strong sense of environmental stewardship. A person who is in love with the forest isn't going to tear it down if you tell them there's gold under it. A young companies mission statement often reflects it's founders personal convictions. If we had an environmentalist society, we would have companies with a minimal impact. P.S. Elon can't save the world (on his own). We're all on the same boat.
No man can single-highhandedly save the world; only destroy. Elon Musk has the potential to revolutionize several industries if he steps back and detaches himself from his ego. He is an entrepreneur who is not risk adverse.
He's not a rocket scientist, but if all you got is rocket scientists, you're probably not going to get to space. Or be able to do the things you want if you get there. Elon's not welding together rocket motors but he's not sitting back in his mansion watching TSLA ticker tape, either.
I think it's a little showing of the times when we expect the man who has been in charge of: Relandable rocket boosters Kicked off the surge to go to Mars again Brought solar energy to a much higher level (Solar roof tiles) Kicked off electric vehicle interest on a wide scale Created Paypal Renovating the transport system Brought back competitive space technologies Created tens if not hundreds of thousands of jobs To be also, a nice man all of the time, like I'm sure none of the stresses of these jobs are getting to him. If he has a Messiah complex it's because the public fed it to him.
Which was never my point, he's a swift business man who has a vision. That much I can appreciate, the issue is that the cult of personality he's built up make him out to be exactly that.
he's still our best chance at getting people to mars. he has the imagination and the money to fund it.
Right. I guess when he sleeps on the couch at work for a week without going home because its crunch time. Hes just there sitting on his ass doing nothing right?
Elon is a massive dick, but it'd be shameful to ignore all the good he's done as well. Not that that excuses his behavior of course
Eeeh, it's hard to tell. Perception and hype matter quite a lot.
Simple people like to spread negative opinions about high profile persons to make themselves feel adequate, even if that person has done more for mankind than they ever will.
I don't think Twitter shows anyone's true nature. I'm also not sure how I would react if I had people turn on me over night.
Or perhaps they hold negative opinions because they have consistent standards on what is asshole behavior and what isn't, regardless of a person's contributions to some grand effort?
Can we talk about the time Elon Musk tried to tell a Nanobot researcher that her credentials were BS by hotlinking an Uncylopedia article?
I never thought I'd hear that name outside of highschool debate
Probably not, but by prodding at the industry with his overpriced car and bombastic, if obnoxious attitude he has gotten a few more manufacturers to start looking at EVs in a much more serious light. Elon Musk may be becoming a bigger prick by the year but he's at least being a helpful prick so far.
Why?
