Doesn't help either that Texas has distinct regions, between west/southwest, gulf area, east, central, and north. The state is huge, and which part you visit will severely influence your experience. Typical yanks would probably enjoy north/central the most, since the cities are very developed and the population is almost split 50/50 between Republicans and Democrats.
