Heh, and I just had pizza for dinner so this was rather appropriate.
I wonder how much of the science in ration creation can be applied to civilian goods. Seems like it's all about good-tasting, nutritious meals that are highly shelf-stable without all of the BS that makes it into the stuff we buy.
"Cheese spread with jalapenos. Nice. That's like gold."
He's not lyin'.

that amazingly doesn't look at bad tbh
I used to get pizza Lunchables as a kid. This video just reminds me that MREs are Lunchables for soldiers with whack box art.
There are civilian MRE's. They're like 500 times more tasty, look better, and aren't nasty garbage. The channel makes the MRE's look good but they really aren't/
It depends on the specific one but I don't think they are too bad at all. Definitely not something I'd want to eat every day for weeks on end, but for a pack of food designed to survive long periods in harsh conditions you could do much worse than US military MRE's.
that cobbler looked like someone had already eaten and thrown it back up.
It tastes p good though
"good tasting" "nutritious"
sounds nice
That intro music sounds like something I'd hear in my dreams while fighting the flu
Almost all MRE stuff looks like that, and a lot of it is salty as fuck
the appeal of an MRE is the experience and the feeling, as well as the taste. Some of it is surprisingly, not bad, and some of is actually somehow pretty good.
My worst MRE experiance is vegan pasta, but it's pretty good once you add spice and maybe beans
I've been summoned yet again.

I appreciate that I'm not in the armed forces and therefore wouldn't be constantly putting up with them, whereas I'm sure some of you have copious experience and are probably sick of 'em. That being said, I'm the kind of guy who's happily had "meals" of just rice and bouillon and still genuinely enjoyed myself, so I think my acceptance of boring "utility" foods would be higher than most. Who knows, though - I've admittedly never had an MRE, although I've always wanted to try 'em.
Also, I'm aware that civilian MREs are a thing, but I was always under the impression that those would've been the knock-offs while the military gets the real stuff - I mean, it's made by contracted and military nutritionists specifically for the soldiers who don't have a choice of what to eat and are in actual combat conditions, and is also meant to keep morale high while being all the nutrition those soldiers are getting, so I'd have imagined that they'd want to make 'em as good as they can (I mean, it's not like the US military doesn't have the budget). At the very least, I know civilian rations are supposed to cost a hell of a lot more compared to getting actual government MREs at a military surplus store or something.
I love the contrast in the opening field pictures between the pizza and vomelet videos. Pizza has soldiers sitting together eating the MREs, smiling and talking, having a good time. Vomelet has the soldiers lying around looking sick and using them as gag props instead.
most civilian "military style" MREs are clones of actual MRE menus anyway
the shelf life standards are probably more lax since they probably won't be sitting in the desert for months but taste-wise they're generally about the same or better (or so I've heard)
they're fun as a novelty but they're made for the white american palete so it all starts to taste like wet cardboard after you've been through 50 of em
While I appreciate the need for providing a balanced meal, as well as improving morale of the troops by giving them something actually decent to eat, are most MREs as complicated as that one? It’s almost like half of the MRE is just packaging and wrapping for the dozen of things in it. The actual pizza itself was relatively small, and it had too many sweet things in it?
i dunno, just that when I clicked into this thread, I thought the MRE would only contain like an entrée, the pizza itself and a small dessert.
steves videos have always had bizarre titles
Eating an MRE when you have a kitchen and food in the fridge is like watching porn on your phone when you have a desktop
MREs look nasty but it's almost always just American ones. His french, spanish, and asian MRE reviews are great because the food actually looks like it was made to be enjoyed and not taken out of a american school cafeteria and put in a plastic bag.
Like seriously that pizza is only slightly different than the same one I would have gotten in middle and high school. Probably the same shelf life too TBH.
Chili and beans is probably the best one I ever had. Its insaine how a good meal can really boost the moral of people in the field.
a good amount of it is already applied in civilian goods, iirc a lot of preservatives we use were first developed for MREs
I'd love to try french but their 24hr packs are like $40 a pop
The sweet things are kind of a necessity. I'm used to working all day in the hellscape that is El Paso, and when it's all we've got to eat, we save the dessert items for when we get tired. I typically save my peanut butter and jelly for when I'm on the go and need some quick carbs.
American ones are among the best for the purpose they are intended to fill.
They are light weight and nutritionally complete with strict standards for production.
They are also safe and have a long shelf life.
A bunch of the other nations have ones that look better to eat, and are probably amazing, but they don't have the same R&D that goes into making them nutritionally complete, light in weight, and safe to consume after long exposure to harsh conditions.
I completely concur with everything you said. American MREs are not the most delicious thing in the world (I could eat chili mac every day though) regardless, every time I need something to eat, they get me through the day very easily. The standard for daily nutrition is three MREs per day, but even on two, or rarely one, I feel totally fit to fight. They're not perfect, but I don't know how I would improve them much more. If it were up to me, I'd cut the menu (there are 24 menu items) in half, and just pick the 12 soldier favorite MREs.
