Canada will join Mexico and other European and Asian auto-producing countries this week to plot strategy ahead of the potential imposition of tariffs on vehicles and auto parts exported to the United States.
Trump has threatened to impose tariffs under Section 232 of the decades-old U.S. Trade Expansion Act. The legislation allows the president, under certain circumstances, to impose duties recommended by his commerce secretary under the notion that the goods being imported are a threat to national security.
Critics warn the potential tariffs of up to 25 per cent, plus retaliatory measures, could add thousands of dollars to the price of a vehicle, kill jobs and cause significant harm to the global auto industry.
While the Geneva meeting is only preliminary, it could lead to a co-ordinated response among auto-producing nations outside the U.S.
What's amazing to me is you've clearly got a Russian agent in government, doing everything he can to systematically dismantle the country from the inside for Putin's gain, and the Republicans controlling the government are sitting around with their thumbs up their asses, doing fuck all about it.
What's amazing to me that people didn't see this sort of chaos coming when you base your culture and someone's worth on a system that encourages people to work more underhandedly
rather than harder or smarter. We set ourselves up for this.
It's going to take the US a long time to unfuck trade relations after all this
I'm hoping we're all dead by 2020 so everything will be alright
Only a few people need to be dead by 2020 for things to head towards being alright.
I swear I’m not going to do anything crazy, CIA people.
Thanks to NAFTA, the auto industries across Mexico, the USA, and Canada are effectively one giant market -- raw materials, parts, and autos roll out of the supply chain in all three countries and feed demands, usually across a border. Raw materials sourced in the US might be shipped to Mexico to make parts which might get shipped to Canada to be assembled into a finished vehicle that is then transported into the US for dealership sale.
A lot of American automobiles are assembled in Ontario, so go fucking ahead, you orange vodka muppet, make our day. Raise taxes on your own voters and call it a winnable trade war.
He'll say he's winning when his voters still support him from multi billion dollar subsidies and kickbacks to them.
The funniest thing is, a government who chooses what businesses get subsidies and bailout money from heavy losses caused by the government's own trade war is socialism, and it's the bad kind of socialism that has the federal government partisanly choosing winners and losers among businesses and the general public.
And even prominent Republicans in Congress are opposing the President's pork-barrel farmer bailout.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who has mounted a so-far unsuccessful bid to force congressional approval of Trump’s tariffs, expressed exasperation Tuesday — at both the president’s new policy and his colleagues for swallowing it. “You have a terrible policy that sends farmers to the poorhouse, and then you put them on welfare, and we borrow the money from other countries,” he said. “It’s hard to believe there isn’t an outright revolt right now in Congress over what is happening.”
More proof that the Republican Party isn't the Republican Party anymore, it's the Trump Party and all of the old Republican ideals are out the window.
tbqh I'm glad. Show the shitheads in the rust belt why free trade is important
From what I'm seeing, it's only US and UK that are going the way of Brazil.
They won't understand what's happening to them, or why it's happening. Truthfully, they shouldn't be required to understand it, there should be a retard-blocking mechanism somewhere in the diagram.
galaxy brain thinking: trump is the best president because he's uniting the entire world (against him)
they're not sitting on their asses, mine is throwing temper tantrums and drafting articles of impeachment for rosenburg based on the fact that he can't get every mueller document out.
Because he's currently making them rich. The second the hammer comes down on it all, they're already prepared to scurry away like roaches in light to whatever haven of impunity they have lined up, if they aren't outright dead of old age by then. To expand on the insect analogy, the GOP are like mosquitoes - sucking out as much blood as they can from the country while they still sense it's safe, but knowing that they'll be swatted flat the second they give us an opening.
