https://i.imgur.com/0pueb3O.png Welcome to "Computer Illiterate People Who Think They Know Things (& General Chat)", the thread that began as a place to mock and vent about the computer-illiterate people who tend to make our lives hell, but is now basically just general chat for computer nerds. We get up to some weird stuff (I'm pretty sure I was crowned emperor at one point?) but we're pretty open. Go ahead and talk about the latest hardware-level vulnerability Intel admitted to, the half-broken 8-bit micro you found in a dumpster, the various ways PHP sucks, or heck, even tell your story of a computer-illiterate person being an idiot about it. In addition to this thread we also have a [Steam Group], the occasional Google Hangout, and an IRC channel: Server: benjeffery.ca Port: 6667 Channel: #cipwttkt I hear there's also something called a "Telegram" but I have no idea what that even is, let alone how to use it. If you're looking for tech support, you'll have better luck in Quick Questions That Don't Deserve A Thread, or whatever the newest version of that thread is. Or if you're looking for PC building advice, there's a thread for that too. Only real rule (besides the global FP rules) is, try not to go all fanboy on us. Windows vs. Linux vs. Mac? Vim vs. Emacs? Which Javascript framework is best? Who cares? Just have fun with it. Previous Threads (And yes, the version number is still in hexadecimal, thank you for noticing)
New thread smell. Smells like sweat.
Sorry for killing the previous thread Anyway, how dangerous is it running EoL hypervisor? http://i.heykidwannayiff.com/chrome_2018-07-31_17-19-39.png OVH did some modifications to the XenServer 6.5 image to get Raid 1 working and the system is now unable to automatically upgrade to newest version and SyS doesn't have KVM available. We can't even do backups because the lack of funds and lack of server to migrate to and nobody wants to wing it with the upgrade due of too much risk
Uhm. I wouldn't recommend using that.
Really shouldn't be running anything EoL in an environment with sensitive data.
Yeah I know We're still looking for alternatives, shut off VMs that are not important and marked several VMs to be nuked/not to be backed up Problem is that exporting a 60GB VM is alone going to take all night after we done some tests We borrowed some Linux boxes for storage but it's going to take ages to move ton of data back and forth
l'eau d' fresh thread It's really difficult to teach IT when you can't rely on students to do -some- research, because they have no internet access at school. And I hate reading stats off 5-year-old books as if kids today will need to know the speeds RAM reached in the DDR1 days. I've been trying to find a way to do a local instance of kahoot or something like it too but everything seems to require an internet connection. I'd just love some sort of ad-hoc thing that let me use my laptop as a host/display and let kids go to a locally-hosted website to vote and do quizzes.
You could do something similar to the Piratebox project and self-host Moodle locally. Might be able to use something like http://www.kiwix.org/ to self-host stuff from wikipedia too
I do have a copy of Kiwix and all of wikipedia/wikibooks, piratebox seems like a good way to self-host it on a laptop.
New place?
That post on that thinkpad is from 2015 so I doubt it
So, after 3 years of owning this phone, i finally see that magic icon called 4G. Before swapping for a new SIM card i only got HSPA+, idk why i didn't have 4G, that sim card was from 2012 and back them 4G was going mainstream. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/d6fadc39-5057-467d-baf7-3228f1c15be5/image.png
Good signal. You on the same plan with your provider or a new plan?
same plan, it's just a prepaid
Pro 1 or Surface RT? I might need to break out the RT sooner or later, didn’t they get the boot loaded unlocked?
My boyfriend is making me sell my Surface Pro 1 as a condition of me having bought that GPD Win 2 from a friend. I love this machine, I don't wanna sell it and go through the hassle of wiping data and all that
Did you pay for it with your own money? Tell him to back off, it's your property.
I just had an issue with my BenQ V2400W (2008) monitor where a green line would randomly appear. I think the panel is on its last legs, but I put pressure on the bottom bezel and it went away. EDIT: As of writing this, it happened again lol. Same fix. If this were still my main monitor I'd be pissed.
It kinda sounds like a loose flat flex connection? The glue losing its strength because of age I have yet to have a monitor with the panel to go bad When I had monitor failures It was either the caps, the buttons or the backlight going bad due of old age, and it was always HP monitors
That was one thought. The problem doesn't persist, so yeah. It's winter (ish) here in New Zealand, this monitor is usually in standby mode when my computer is off. This is a rare occurrence where I have turned the monitor off last night.
I got a rather simple question. I'm trying to install a copper shim between the GPU Die and the heatpipe in a laptop. The copper shim itself is from an old Asetek pump, and was the cold plate off that. If I'm installing this shim between the two, should I match the exact dimensions of the shim to the die? Would having a large surface area than what contacts the heat pipe retain heat within this shim and lower efficiency of heat dissipation? My logic is that the heat will transfer a lot slower and propagate back throughout the copper shim as it has no airflow or means of pulling heat out of the piece not contacting the heatpipe.
I doubt it. I mean that's basically what an IHS on a normal processor does and mounting naked die with equal cooling has been shown to make little difference.
I need help. Will this: Ubiquiti Networks US-8 power this: Ubiquiti UniFi UAP ? Can't figure out the PoE. (I'm buying it for me)
https://chie.club/files/images/st/umax%20is%20shit.png i can even remember my old contabo windows vps being faster then this i know that i get what i pay for but jesus this bad
Those goddamn IBM terminals looked sexy.
Thins upsets me because that’s exactly what will happen.
robocopy C:\subfolder\ C:\ /MIR Literally ran this and I didn't even realize the issue until it was basically done
Trying to delete an old i9100 backup on Windows and apparently a couple of files have a filename that's invalid so Windows is refusing to acknowledge they're there. Explorer, PowerShell and cmd.exe all refuse to delete them. Nice going Microsoft. Where's my USB stick...
Why is it so hard to find a SATA floppy drive?
My USB one is ruining the clean lines of my computer case but I don't want to put a controller card in my PC and deal with ribbon cable.
