https://apnews.com/07c8fd1825ed42e08393f7d151a0664d/US-says-no-need-for-better-gas-mileage,-heavy-vehicles-safer In excerpts obtained by The Associated Press, the administration argues that heavier vehicles are safer than lighter ones and that people would drive more — and be exposed to increased risk — if their cars get better mileage. ???????
What they don't mention is that heavy vehicles will actually completely obliterate the lighter vehicles they crash into and anyone inside having a longer braking distance because of their weight. So they can't really yell 'SAFETY' with that.
"thinking emoji" I don't see why people would drive more just because they get better mileage on their car.

Gas Conglomerates are pushing hard for that money, holy shit.
Good lord.
This is the dumbest shit. The dumbest logic.
Going by this logic I should just sell all of my vehicles and drive my families class A RV everywhere

The excerpts also show the administration plans to challenge California’s long-standing authority to enact its own, tougher pollution and fuel standards I feel like it's like a broken record at this point, but this is so hypocritical.
STATES RIGHTS except when it: interferes with the gas and oil lobby interferes with the above for energy competition tries to advance civil rights for minorities but otherwise states rights are great for being regressive about the above points yep
Add onto that Net Neutrality
Lol, trump himself justifying pickup truck logic "my car so big im safe as fuck, fuck anyone i hit'

that's not necessarily true, just because a vehicle is light does not inherently make it unsafe. Being light just means it's pushed out of the way easier than a heavier car if it's properly designed. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJzZ7-Od6KY
I wish this wasn't true but its completely true
lolwut? Come on, really? Even I, someone who gives no fucks about environmentality, fuel economy, or crashworthiness, can spot this as a fucktarded idea a mile away. WTF?
you can just come out and say you don't care about the environment guys, you dont gotta make up really stupid shit like this
It's technically correct, but god is the reasoning stupid. Yes, Americans love monstrously oversized cars and trucks, that doesn't mean they need to be "protected" like this. In fact I think our cities could benefit from aggressive marketing of Kei cars to free up a lot of space, especially since we also don't have very good public transportation available.
I honestly don't even know if this is their stupid Captain Planet villain 'fuck this earth' agenda or some overpaid thinktank full of 'brains' who think that because they've connected "more drive" with "more die" they've lifehacked statistics forever.
To be fair, I actually am an enthusiast and would hit the touge more if I got more than 25/29mpg or if gas were cheaper. That's why I want to get a bike.
It's definitely majorly the thinktanks at fault here for muddying the waters just enough that scientists are having difficulty cutting through effectively data-bullshit. This is more or less what it'd be like to be a respectable climate scientist in the present world: You present your analysis which was passed through many layers of fellow colleagues offering input and helping you find the truth in the data you put together over painstaking hundreds of hours; the man next to you opens his mouth and the equivalent of the following spills out: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/133737/670a31c9-aa28-452d-a93a-d2eacadd4c33/image.png
There is the concept of the "gish gallop" named after a formerly prominent creationist. Basically, every false but maybe somewhat plausible (to uninformed people) idea you throw out requires orders of magnitude more time to debunk and disprove. Duane Gish would enter debates and just throw out a hundred of these small statements which he knew his opponent would have no time to properly respond to, leaving the audience sympathetic to Gish because "his opponent couldn't even respond"
Congratulations?
