"KUALA LUMPUR: New Zealand's transport authority said on Tuesday (Jul 31) it would adopt gender-neutral signs after a seven-year-old girl said it was "wrong and unfair" to suggest only men could work on roadside power lines. Zoe Carew spotted a "linemen" hazard sign - to warn drivers about workers repairing or installing electricity and telecommunications cables - when she was en route to her grandparents' house last month. She took issue with the sign because "women can be line workers" too, which she wrote in a letter to the head of the New Zealand Transport Agency, Fergus Gammie. "Why does the sign say 'linemen' when the people working on the lines may be men or women?" she wrote in the letter, which her mother, Caitlin Carew, shared on the social media site Twitter this week." Fuck off
The whole modern world obsession with correct gendering and/or sexism is annoying as fuck. Jesus christ if something is named after male/female - it doesn't fucking automatically make it sexist, let it fucking go and find something better to do in your fucking miserable life. And governments should learn to say no and not be afraid of being accused of sexism or some other retarded accusation. It's been there for years and nobody complained but yeah lets waste budget on this shit.
Is this one of those things where someone pretends their child did something when it was actually the Mum?
Yes, soon we will simply be known as 'Hu'
For real, I cannot imagine a kid giving a fuck about this
If it was the child, she must have been brainwashed by her mother so fucking hard all her life. And that is the biggest crime here.
Seems like people are getting upset over a non issue In a letter of reply posted to the agency's official Twitter account on Tuesday, Gammie promised that authorities would replace old signs as they wore out with new ones reading, "line crew". Someone asked if they would make them gender neutral and so they said sure we'll replace them with gender neutral ones as we replace them
"7 year old's plea" more likely one of her families plea but using a 7 year old to pull those heart strings. I'm not opposed to the signs being changed but maybe they should do it going forward rather than going round and changing the current ones. I feel like these """""""little """victories""" """""" ultimately serve against feminist interests since it just fatigues people and makes them indifferent or even antagonistic toward feminism. Like if people feel like "meh apparently everything is sexist these days" they're less likely to be open to considering things which are actually sexist. This aint gonna help anyone imo; and lots of these types of thing, tend to be more about a person's ego than actually doing something for a cause.
Then its perfectly reasonable imo
New Zealand's transport authority said on Tuesday (Jul 31) it would adopt gender-neutral signs after a seven-year-old girl Nope bullshit sorry. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/129/102922e7-8f9c-43f3-a86a-1fa0e5909f1e/DjWb461U4AIQtHw.jpg orig.jpg I've seen this bullshit of "My kid said this really complex thing" on Twitter more times than I can count.
I got told by a professor to not use the word mankind to describe us. did it anyways.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." - A quote from my 2 year old child after they completed Dark Souls
I'm so glad at 7 my parents where letting me watch cartoons, read comics and play outside rather than saturating me with their stupid shit. I mean, kids should definitely be aware of social stuff, but at 7 'social stuff' should mean being nice to your class mates and sharing, not battling the patriarchy because mommy said it's the right thing to do. I can only imagine this child is going to grow up to be the most annoying piece of shit
she's not wrong. why can't something so simple be changed to appear more inclusive? it's quite an insignificant thing to complain about but imean, why not?
policeman, fireman, mailman, rifleman none of these inherently imply that only males are doing these jobs, that's just how language works policeperson fireperson mailperson rifleperson there might be a few rare exceptions to this convention but I sure as fuck can't think of any off the top of my head
Because it's already inclusive. "Workmen" does not imply gender, it's a generic name for a profession.
Are you sure about that? When I was about the same age, I had extremely tightly held convictions about shit way dumber than this.
This isn't an issue of it "it's being change to be more inclusive", it's that the change is the result of misinterpreting the meaning of a term in order to fit an "It's not Inclusive!!!" Narrative. "Man" in contexts like this does not refer to "They're a male", but that they're a person with that role, in the same way terms like "Crewman" or "Mankind" refer to both genders - it's gender-neutral in the first place, it isn't some absurd "They're only implying they're men, that's sexist!" situation and it's disingenuous to think so or try to claim it is.
Honestly I'm glad New Zealand has solved so many major problems that they can address perceived inequality in roadwork signs.
guys its not a big deal why get worked up over a kid's comment. "it's wasting budget". mate there's far deeper problems with budget management than a sign change. "governments need to be stricter". they're already hard as nails on public issues. singapore is a very successful country considering the area around, it has a rich infrastructure and very forward thinking. this attitude that the government are doing things for the people is only positive for their people and spreads positivity. you have an issue in your country, you deal with it but this is Singapore.
Who gives a fuck about some stupid ass sign, why not make the normal street signs also feature a female looking figure with a bow and skirt. that's totally not a waste of time, effort, money and would also totally not make it confusing for who the sign is meant for. Fucking idiots trying to look like they're saving humanity.
take THAT patriarchy!!!
I'm sure a seven year old cared enough about something like this to want to write a letter. If it legit bothers you that a sign or just some kind of word has "man" in it then you have got to be one thin skinned cunt or just have other issues tbh Not everything in the world is sexist
Yeah but those jobs are now called police officers, firefighters, and mail carriers. We've been phasing out gendered terms for jobs for a while now because the ungendered ones tend to be more descriptive and more accurate.
I just switched to humanity.
Why do you care about the stupid ass sign so much? It doesn't cost anything to replace damaged signs with a more accurate one that actually reflects what the profession is called by professionals in that field.
Police officer, firefighter, postal worker, soldier It's such a small thing that it's even hard for me to find any reason to be against it.
I'm going to file complaints with Knipex, Klein, Crescent, Channellock and Irwin over their sexist lines of Linesmans pliers. Women can cut wires too. https://image.ibb.co/dmMC6K/events_general_rosietheriveter_31_169_2400x1350_1280x720.jpg Honestly though it's like the mailman/mail-carrier change that has happened. Just a slow shift that no one will really notice care about and effects no one. Now if they started rolling out new signs across the board for this kind of stuff immediately then yeah, that's a massive waste of tax dollars, but just updated as replaced wont effect anyone. Though I wouldn't expect the Journeyman's unions to be changing their names anytime soon.
What does Singapore have to with this article??? I don't get what you mean.
