To me it just seems like this is the only way for Google to get a search engine at all in China without the entire thing getting censored anyway. By playing nice with the Chinese government.
Does it make anyone else uncomfortable that China can influence other countries and companies with their policies like this? It's the little things that add up.
Very.
option 1: don't enter chinese market, don't make money option 2: enter chinese market and censor shit that china doesn't want also "does it make anyone uncomfortable that the US can influence companies by making them hide warez content in search results"
Blocking warez results isn't quite as much of a potential human rights problem as active pro-government censorship by a single ruling party.
lmfao they get rid of one shady government function (us military) to move on to another right after
This is exactly what happened with GDPR, so no.
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with countries influencing corporations, I mean countries inherently influence pretty much everything that goes on within their domain, it's like being concerned that countries are "influencing" corporations to not sell people lead-filled chicken nuggets because of health regulations. When it gets concerning is when countries are compelling corporations to do things that are unethical, ie censoring the internet to appease the authoritarian ruling party.
I agree, but that's also entirely subjective and kind of hard to define in a solid way. My personal opinion is that things would be much better off if the internet was entirely free and the only power being used was to arrest those doing things that are illegal in their own countries, but that's not how it is and as it stands, this is pretty standard.
No joke, recently they replaced "Don't be evil" with "Do good" They're unironically just going full doublespeak. You wouldn't get away with writing that into a captain planet episode, yet here we are.
