The game will be a great card game, but it's twenty dollars, the cards won't be free, and no Steam trading so Valve gets the market cut even if you trade with your friends.
$20 for a card game you'll have to Shell out money for to get more cards? I'd say this'll probably flop, but then again csgo is $15 and they make a killing off the skins and crates for that, so who knows
When was the last time a Valve game flopped?
This is Valve's first game where the items actually affect gameplay.
Bad idea.
Alien Swarm didn't flop afaik, was just abandoned. Day of Defeat Source?
There's a first time for everything and hopefully this is it
This is gonna be a fun sell when your biggest competitor is free.
They had a whole presentation and everything about they don't like free content anymore and don't want it in their games.
I was willing to give Artifact a chance, but having to pay $20 AND buying cards? Fuck off
I seriously don't fucking understand how they have the gall to charge for the base game and lock vital gameplay elements behind fucking "micro"transactions.
Who wants to bet there's going to be at least 1 card worth at least $100 a month after launch that's overpowered and Valve won't change it because... well, we'd never know why, because they wouldn't say shit about it.
I wonder who wrote that with a straight face.
"We're making an F2P game except without the F part because fuck you."
TF2 and Dota 2 are some of the best and most fair F2P games on the market, and they make tons of money. It's like they are refusing to put what they learned from those games into practice.

Cards games are fun - said no one.
There's also going to be card rotation. Characters will die and stuff like that.
Can we get L4D3 instead?
...so you're going to pay money for cards that will be fucking removed from the game?
I seriously fail to see how this all fits together in a way that doesn't absolutely fuck customers over big time.
This could honestly be Valve's worst game to date, all things considered.
If not that, can L4D2 get a nice resurge in popularity that lasts a few years?

Wait, you mean I also have to pay to play this? It's Valve who should pay me for playing a card game :|
The last tweet is the entire reason this game was made.
Valve isn't satisfied with the infinite money printing machine that is the Steam store, TF2, CS:GO and DOTA 2, they need literally ALL the money in the world. Hence they now created a Pay2Win card game.
Oh boy, I'll have to miss it.
CSGO might get significantly less support when Artifact releases. Updates have already slowed down, player base is declining, and a lot of the content Valve adds isn't really received well (R8, Canals, paid sprays, new sounds at first) TF2 might get a new companion.
So it's a $20 card game, full of micro-transactions, pay-to-win features, and an economy based around buying and trading from players.
What this tells me is that they wanted to design something that'll make them a shitload of money first, and the game itself was a complete afterthought.
Richard Garfield actually approached Valve with the Artifact concept in 2014. He had been conceptualizing it for several years prior.
Doesn't mean they weren't planning the micro-transaction model before then. We're talking about a company that added hats to a 2 player co-op game and then stopped updating it when they failed.
I keep saying it; free bases of cards, all unlocked at the start, with cosmetic variants being the way of making money is the only model I'd play a digital card game. It's utterly foolish to go any other way unless you're going for whales nigh on exclusively. The worst part is that it's working wonders in the game this is based on in DotA 2. Hell they could've gone the route of Smite or Quake Champions in free to play with an unlock everything for a fair price option and they would make more money. I hope this flops on launch so they'll attempt to go for the Smite option later on.
So Richard Garfield brought Valve a game and they fucked it up.
I'm just hoping for some badass dota art honestly
