"According to the public broadcaster SRF, the police in Zurich have launched the "Hot Dog campaign", and are educating dog owners on how they can protect their four-legged friends in the hot weather, given that the overheated pavements can be painful on their feet."
dog clogs
My mom's friend went to Spain earlier this year, she had to go home after a few days cause her dog was so overwhelmed by the heat and she couldn't walk it cause the pavements get so incredibly hot in this.
pooch boots
mutt struts
but are dogs listening?
I have never had a dog that would put up with boots. They have always either stood completely still or flopped on the ground in protest
A bit off topic here but now with the persistent heat topic in mind there is another important reminder that may be obvious for many but dangerous for others who don't know: don't shave dogs.
When you see big dogs with dense fur or double coat panting some people may think you could help with shaving it. Dogs needs the fur for protection against both cold and hot weather. Breeds like huskies have no pigmentation in the skin and leaving it exposed could easily end in infections, burns, and skin cancer.
And when the fur grows back, the double coat never blends as it should again.
Keep it in mind before taking care of your pets under intense weather. An action of good will could be problematic for them.
This would be worth it just to see everyone walking their dogs trying to act normal while their dog looks like they've been drinking all day.
I see this posted on Facebook quite often and every time I see one of the posts I can't help but wonder, who the hell would shave an animal that spends its entire life covered in fur without at least looking it up and seeing if it's safe or even advisable to do so?
The barrier of entry to own a pet is very low. Much lower than it should be. That means a very large amount of incredibly fucking dense people end up with pets when they probably couldn't even be considered able to take care of themselves properly.
"Your coat holds too much heat, take it off."
"More hair means more heat."
That is what evolution told to *us*. Some people projects what we give for granted and use human logic for animals that are used to us. Not a smart move if you ask me.
How about not walking your dog and yourself at 10am~3pm?
Because people have jobs?
Ah yes, is a thing it should be more talked about. Apparently in Spain, is common for vets to find burns or even blood wounds at the paws due the intense heat.
exactly... dogs have managed with that fur for aeons, you'd think they can keep managing
Most cat owners thing that owning a cat is as easy as just feeding it and letting it sleep, and using it as a toy to bother whenever the fuck they want
It's like, seriously, If you aren't going to interact with your cat, fuck off lol. Same exact thing about dogs too really.
Depends on the animal I'd say. In general, I wouldn't shave a pet, especially one that goes outside. But I had to take care of my aunts longhaired guinea pig for a while and on the hottest days of summer they'd cut his hair with scissors to combat the heat. When I tried to cut his long hair down to short, he'd get scared by the sound of the scissors, so decided to shave him.
He wasn't afraid of the shaver and was pretty relaxed.
The difference was huge though. Before the shave he was drinking way too much and sitting in a corner of his cage the whole day, but after he was immediatly more active and running around
and not drinking a ridiculous amount of water.
not everyone should have dogs, thats very true
Saw a pair of dogs chained outside a grocery store, they were in the shadow and even got their own water bowl.
Thought that was nice of the owner.
Always make sure to bring water for your animals if you are away with them.
