Probably the best thing he could have done. He was gradually becoming the #2 at Red Bull, and if he joined Ferrari or Mercedes, he’d definitely be a #2 with them. But at Renault he’d clearly be the team’s #1, and although Renault don’t have the best chassis at the moment, they do have a good engine, and there are of course the rule changes next year and in 2021 to shake things up regarding the chassis.

Renault might be outright competitive next year.

That came out of nowhere, risky move. Now it's all up to Renault, would hate to see RIC share the same fate with Alonso.

Risky move indeed, but it might pay off like when Hamilton made the move to Mercedes. Everyone at the time said it was a bad idea, but look where he is now.

At least Renault aren’t using the Honda engine next year, while Red Bull are.
