hi guys. i've been wanting to get back into making games. i've previously used game maker extensively and unity a little bit.
i'm struggling to do things in unity with 2d and i was wondering is there any reason to actually use unity for 2d games instead of game maker?
just use what you're comfortable with my man
If you happen to be struggling with the coding, try giving Construct 2 (or 3) a try.
It has a really intuitive scripting system.

I don't know about intuitiveness of coding system of Construct, lads. For me, Game Maker Language is easier to scribble some working code in. I am actually working on a project in Game Maker. Sadly, because of an one turns-out-to-be overly complicated powerup, my progress is halted for an indefinite amount of time.
Benefit of unity might be the ease of porting to tablet?
Im not incompetent at programming, i have a bachelor of IT majoring in software develooment. I just havent done any programming in about 2 years so im struggling to get back into it.
I think ill stick with unity, ill just need to be patient.
From my experience making 2D games in 3D engines like Unity is a struggle in itself just because it's designed for 3D games first and 2D games second. I've personally had trouble with really nitpicky shit like pixel-perfect sprite rendering. Luckly Unity's 2D API is way more developed than Unreal's, for instance.
But to me it's worth the trouble because if you plan on working on a 3D or maybe just a 2.5D game in the future, you don't have to worry about learning a new engine -- you're already working in a 3D engine.
So basically it's like the first guy said, just work with what you're most comfortable with.
Unity now has a pixel perfect camera (though it's part of a preview package, so not really for use in "production" projects).
Hmm, no? im making games for my own enjoyment, if i want to make a 3d game ill make a 3d game, but i want to make a 2d game.
