The wild pony swim at Chincoteague, a community tradition for more than 90 years, is coming under fire from an animal rights group calling for its end.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the popular event, in which wild ponies swim from Assateague to Chincoteague islands along the Maryland and Virginia shore, then are auctioned off, is harmful to the animals. The group urged the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which oversees the swim and auction, to cancel the event.
“This is an event that we see as cruel, dangerous and ill-advised,” said Ashley Byrne, PETA’s associate director.
The fire department fired back in Facebook posts and appears to have no plans to change the event.
oh, neat, I was just there to watch it. peta makes me laugh
Did you buy any?
No sir
fucking cheap-ass
The island is a great place to camp. The ponies will, however, walk right up to you and steal food out of your camp. Even right out of your cooking pots if it's not too hot.
I call for an end to PETA
Yeah it's kind of like that island in Japan with all the cats

She addressed the organization’s concern about their treatment of the animals, noting that a pony has never died during the annual swim, that all holding pens are stocked with food and water during roundups, and that the company spends $27,000 a year on veterinary care for the ponies.
“I have yet to hear their reply,” Bowden said.
She’s fed up with the organization, she said.
“I’m at the point now where if they want to pick, we’re ready to pick back,” she said, adding that the pony swim’s 93-year history speaks for itself. “I think that they’ve got bigger fish to fry than to worry about what we’re doing.”

Basically PETA just looking for something to pick on. They choose to focus on 1 particular tragic accident and not look at it from the whole picture and deciding their points.
why people still take PETA seriously, they're huge hypocrites that murder animals
The whole event seems a little bizarre to me but the animals are pretty clearly not in any danger
PETA is putting up a billboard to protest an accident involving a truck carrying pigs, that rolled in my town. PETA doesn't know what they want, just that they are angry about whatever it is.
heh
lmao peta is a joke, the only valid response is ignoring them or telling them to fuck off

Well there’s a mistake in the article right there.
Fuck off PETA you attention whores. I've yet to see them do a damn thing except upset and aggravate people, spreading lies and other bullshit along the way.
What about all those dogs you kill every year PETA? Who's gonna complain about those?
