You can build, explore and fight monsters. Is this like Minecraft but 2d? While being obviously inspired, it is a ton different. It features more mobs, many more items, bosses, a dungeon, and more challenging and diverse gameplay. It will be updated often as well. One way to look at it is such: Minecraft = Building, Terraria = combat and coop Should I buy it? Yes, if you like 2D shooters/adventure games such as Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Metroid, or Castlevania. You would also like it if you enjoy sandbox games and multiplayer shenanigans. Where can I buy it? For Windows, Mac and Linux you can buy it on steam for $10. There is also options for several other plataforms at their official website What can you do? DIG! Each Terrarian world is filled to the brim with raw materials waiting to be gathered, transformed, and utilized! Coupled with a robust crafting system, the possibilities - and creations - are as limitless as your imagination. EXPLORE! With an assortment of distinct biomes and structures scattered throughout the landscape, each excursion abounds with the potential for legendary discoveries. From the serene grasslands to the cruel Dungeon to the ominous Corruption to the very pit of Hell itself, hours will tick by like seconds as you delve ever deeper into the wonders and mysteries of your particular world! FIGHT! Terraria is teeming with life – both friend and foe – that you will encounter on your expeditions. Nefarious armies, warring factions, and epic bosses lurk in the shadows as well…seeking to tear you limb from limb. If that wasn’t enough, it seems as if the very moon has set itself against you! Fortunately, you are blessed with a vast and diverse arsenal of ways to defend yourself! From swords to sorcery to firearms to cleverly-designed traps and beyond: Terraria embraces the notion of combat on your terms, no matter the playstyle! Take up arms and show the enemy hordes who’s boss! BUILD! What good is all that exploration, gathering, and fighting without a place to call home? With an immense toolbox of materials and equipment at your disposal, the only limit to building in Terraria is your creativity. Construct a simple home, an imposing fortress, a complex mechanical system, or maybe just a statue of yourself – as is true across all of Terraria, the choice is yours! Become the architect of your world! Players can utilize NPCs by standing near them and right-clicking on them. Most NPCs are vendors, providing items in exchange for coins (and coins in exchange for items). Exceptions are the Guide, who provides information; the Old Man, who is used to summon Skeletron; and the Nurse, who provides Health restoration in exchange for coins instead. As well as selling items, the Goblin Tinkerer provides the Reforge function, and the Dryad tells you the status of Corruption vs. Hallow. Bosses: Bosses are large, aggressive, resilient enemies that offer a substantial challenge to players. There are currently 16 bosses, 1 of which is exclusive to the console version of Terraria, and 6 of which are exclusive to the PC version of Terraria. Each has its own particular way of being summoned. Warning messages appear whenever a boss is about to begin attacking a player. Defeating a boss concludes with a congratulatory message and several items. Items: Armor: Armor is a set of equippable defense items that reduce damage taken from enemies and most other damage sources. Armor pieces are equipped by placing them in the Armor slots of the player's inventory. Each piece of armor has a defense statistic that reduces inflicted damage by half its value, rounded up. An attack cannot be reduced to zero; all attacks will always deal at least 1 damage, regardless of the quality of a player's armor. In addition to the defense provided by individual Armor pieces, most Armor types provide a 'Set Bonus' when all three pieces of the same Armor type are worn simultaneously. For the basic pre-Hardmode Ore armors (Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Tin, Lead, Tungsten and Platinum), this is an additional defense bonus. More advanced or unique Armors can provide other specialized set bonuses. Vanity items: Vanity items are wearable items that can be equipped in Social Slots next to the Armor and Accessories slots in a character's Inventory. Wearing them will change a character's appearance, but will not provide any functionality. Vanity items placed in the armor slots will also cover all armor appearances. Both armor and vanity items can be dyed. Tools: Tools are items primarily used to dismantle World tiles, such as Blocks, Walls, or freeing placed items, to convert them into carryable objects. Pickaxes, axes, and hammers can also be used as melee weapons, although they generally offer less damage than actual Weapons of corresponding tiers. Weapons: Weapons are essentially tools that can be used in combat, and typically deal more damage than their tool counterparts. Some weapons can be crafted at a Work Bench or an Iron Anvil, but others can only be found in Chests, item drops or bought from NPCs. Accessories: Accessories are equippable items that provide defense and/or special abilities, such as limited flight. Up to five accessories may be equipped simultaneously; furthermore, up to five accessories may be placed in vanity slots, which will show the items on the player (if possible) but will not apply their effects. Additionally, one extra slot is attainable by consuming a Demon Heart . Consumables & Ammunition: Consumables are all items that can only be used once, or that have a random chance of being unrecoverable after use. If such an item is "consumed", it is gone forever. Examples of this are Potions, Ammunition, Throwing Weapons and Explosives. Ammunition items are consumable items fired by ranged weapons. When firing a weapon requiring Ammunition, the corresponding Ammunition type must also be present in the player's inventory. Ammunition items are first consumed from the four dedicated Ammo slots of the inventory, as long as an applicable ammunition exists there; otherwise, Ammunition is taken from the other inventory slots, if present there. Damage bonuses also apply to the damage of bullets and arrows. Dyes & Paint: Dyes are items that can be placed in the Dye Slots of a player's Inventory to alter the colors of worn Armor, Accessories or Vanity Items. Paint is used to modify the color of the background wall, blocks and furniture. Baits & Fishing Poles: Bait refers any item that can be used for Fishing. If you do not have any bait, you can use the Fishing Pole, but you will be unable to catch fish. Most critters that are insects or mollusks work as bait. Various types of bait are obtainable through use of the Bug Net. A piece of bait has a chance be used whenever you catch somthing, be it a fish or junk, the chance of it being used up is dependant on its bait power. You can get the three non-critter baits by completing quests for the Angler NPC. The one indie game I have almost 1000 hours in. The game never gets old, and it getting more content is amazing, let alone mods.
I've never been this excited over addition of wind before, but I guess the new music track is what sells it to me. I love Scott's work.
I just want this update to come out, that's all I need... the block replacement feature seems like what it'll be what makes me build good structures and not the same box home
I still haven't "Beaten" this game since 1.3 and the moonlord and all that came out. I think the farthest I've made it is the Twins. It just gets so damn hard in the endgame since I can't dodge for shit.
I remember stopping at some point, coming back not knowing fuck all as to where I was progress wise, so I started again and realised just how much of a chore starting again is in Terraria and then gave up.
Check out the wiki for strategies, particular sets of items make you pretty much invinicible regardless of your skill.
Mining is still a damn chore. A chore I sank way way way too many hours in.
I just remember making a Goblin looking character in one of the facepunch servers. I had all the silt extractors on the server, and then any time someone wanted to use them I'd make them give me all the gold/silver ore they got from it, so I could smelt them all into bars and make a gigantic pile of it in the middle of my underground keep that was near impossible to get in or out of with all the booby traps.
sounds lonely

have they added apache helicopters to terraria yet?
That, and hero's hour long breakdown are two things i remember clearly about terraria.
To be fair the balance starts getting iffy once you hit hardmore, and gets worse and worse from that point on
The game hits a pretty big brick wall once you have to do the refights. All the good gear is locked behind the ore, and it's really hard to fight the new bosses with the trash you have.
An easy duct tape fix is removing the potion cooldown, but in turn makes it unfair on the other side since spamming the potion button makes you pretty much invincible, especially since you've likely got enough cash for thousands of potions by that point.

Could make a new debuff that makes healing/mana potions have an initial 10 second cool down and 10% reduction in healing where you can still use the potions, but each repeated use before the cool down ends resets the cool down, adds an additional 10 seconds, and adds another +10% in healing reduction. The max cap for the debuff is 1 minute 40 seconds of duration and incurs a 100% reduction in healing, preventing you from using any healing items at all if you spammed the heal button. Small encounters with lesser mobs would feel a lot less oppressive early game, and progression throughout the game would later test your patience and discipline with using healing potions because of how much the damage and difficulty of mobs and bosses ramps up.
Diablo 3 devs coincidentally tested a system like that and reportedly for them it didn't reduce potion spam at all. Makes sense since the player will naturally use a potion if the other option not using it and dying as a result.
Another option is it staying a 60 second duration, but every consecutive use after reduces the potion effectiveness by 25%.
If you want to reduce potion spam you need to ensure the player is always capable of avoiding damage. Just adding an arbitrary restriction is punishing the player for reacting to a system which gives them limited options. There's a reason character action games give you invulnerability frames during dodges and other actions while penalising item use, or how the Souls games have limited healing (but don't punish spam). Saying "Fuck you don't spam potions." and giving no additional means of avoiding damage is a stupid way to design a game. Terraria's movement isn't good enough for such a system anyway, the in air movement is too floaty and the ground movement is limited to left or right.
Terraria gameplay in general is flawed due to it basically being based around dodging only. Not taking damage is just always flat-out better than taking it, period. There are no options to tank the damage, shield from it or deal with it otherwise. Fast character usually has pretty much same damage options as slower but tankier character, and to drive the point home, later bosses have so much damage that defence boost between armors becomes nigh irrelevant. Most of gameplay mechanics that rely on taking damage (i.e. thorns buff etc.) or standing still/getting slowed down to a crawl (late-game ranger armors) just aren't feasible in general, let alone in late-game Expert mode, where game starts looking like a bullet hell. Yes, I'm still mad how bad last ranger armor is. Most disappointing set bonus for endgame armor out of all classes. While other classes get freebies, rangers actually have to gimp their speed by toggling unwieldy cloaked state to get any noticeable advantage. Even shroomite armor had it better.

Looks like they're revamping some effects as well, judging by the fallen star?
did anyone notice the eye of cthulhu flying by in the background or the pink moon? also you can place banners on hammered platforms now, nice
you could always do that, I just recently built a little museum on my world with shit tons of hammered platforms
