that slaveship anecdote at the end. oof.
old camp is the best camp
Got this game as demo at on file planet back in the day loved it so much i bought it day one when it came out in the states. I Loved the area and theme of the swamp camp i would always join them for the atmosphere and the aesthetics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZG7xHVwyXk Between Gothic 1 and 2 they share the same place as my fav games of all time.
Might as well crown it best 3rd Person RPG of 2000s. Morrowind has no shit on Gothic 1 and 2.
I love Morrowind but damn Gothic 1 & 2 is underrated compared to Morrowind, and I think Gothic 1 & 2 aged even better than Morrowind too
Gothic was an jnsta cult classic in Germany, Poland and Russia (russian forums is where i got exposure from), its a damn shame nobody beyond that really appreciated the game. Its heavely every single time you launch it, and the damn soundtrack and atmosphere, i can compare it only to Witcher 3 - Piranha back then were ahead of its time.
I like how people say that Gothic 1's controls were garbage and Gothic 2's were better but Gothic 2 literally was Gothic 1's control scheme but with kb&m default bindings instead of pure keyboard bindings. The Gothic games have one of the best representations of weapon skills I've seen in an RPG. Starting off struggling against wild creatures, swinging your rusty sword like an atrophied peasant, and then rolling over them after you invested those first couple skill points is pretty exhilarating.
Yea I tried out Gothic 2 a little while back and uninstalled it pretty quick cuz the controls were so bad. Seems like there's a lot to love about these games but the thought of wrestling with the controls/camera for another 30+ hours was not very appealing. I liked Risen back when it came out tho
