The Secret Genius of Earth Defence Force's Storytelling

Found this in the EDF discord, there's a lot of interesting points I never thought of

Also a reminder that it recently dropped to $20 on steam, the lowest it's ever been. Probably the best time to get into it before EDF5 releases in the west on PS4 later this year
EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair on Steam
I'll watch the video in a moment, but I really, really woulden't say that the story or storytelling in EDF is any kind of genius. For the most part, its background noise with only some of it being relevant, talking about weapon formations that are not relevant to the mission at hand you're doing.
I'll admit that it's fun and nice to hear about the war of the worlds shit going on in the backdrop, and something would be lost if it was gone, but I woulden't call it genius by any means. With that one scientist dude, it's more fun to laugh at him figuring out very obvious shit (like WOW THEY WERE UNDERGROUND THIS ENTIRE TIME!)
That's kinda what the video's about. The way they tell the story, which isn't anything special, both without parodying itself or taking itself too seriously. As he compared to EDF Insect Armageddon, it can go wrong in a few ways, but Sandlot's EDF seems to have found that sweet spot. In the end the game's just a dumb shooter and it's why I love it so much, but they couldn't have told the story any differently without losing the EDF charm
good video. he really nailed how the relatively simple delivery of the story makes it so great. you won't find a better co-op action game on any platform with more content and things to work toward than EDF franchise.
like he said, embracing the Despairâ„¢ is truly the best way to enjoy playing 4.1, and although I can't understand most of what's said in 5, it goes just as hard as 4 does, arguably even more so
