Japanese? Having children?
Same logic used to support racism against white people in America as "punching up".
Sexism and racism are wrong, even if they're against groups that are doing well.
Japanese men are punching up to Japanese women?
what?
In case you're curious about the reasoning and don't feel like reading the article
Tokyo Medical University for years doctored the test scores of female applicants to admit fewer women because school officials believed that once women got married and had children they would be unable to fulfill their emergency shifts at hospitals.
An unnamed official of Tokyo Medical University told the Yomiuri newspaper (link in Japanese) that the practice had been conducted at the school with “quiet consent,” and that it was seen as a “necessary evil” because of worries that women will drop out of the workforce once they become pregnant. The Nikkei newspaper cited an unnamed source (link in Japanese) as saying that the school wanted to ensure it could have sufficient doctors working at its affiliated hospital. An unnamed source told the Asahi newspaper that the worries were also linked to a continuing shortage of doctors in Japan.
So it wasn't out of pure malevolence but I don't think that justifies it either.
Made a wrong assumption before reading the article and hastily edited it to share my thoughts after gaining new understanding on the article.
I'm glad you self corrected.
Disgusting. I'd hope this leads to some serious social reform in Japan but that's probably way too optimistic.
Yeah, it'd be awful to double down on a garbage opinion as opposed to acknowledging that racism actually took place, eh Lambeth?
that would almost be as bad as being off topic
Not sure what you're getting at here. I agree that it's good to change your opinion when you realize you're wrong.
Back on topic, Lambeth, I find it absurd that Japanese schools are able to set gender quotas as long as they make it public.
Imagine being reduced under your full potential merely because of the fact that people of your sex can get pregnant, while also being infertile
Fucking over female employees that either become pregnant or are feared they might become pregnant is pretty common in Japan. Wife was a high school teacher her subject is kinda like teaching students to be CNAs out of highschool and because she is not what is considered 'common core' she works as a contractor hired by the prefecture. Once she became pregnant with our first child, her yearly contract review and renewal came up that March and the prefecture refused to renew her contract citing that they did not want to give her time off as it was seen as essentially wasting the contract. Because her contract just expired she wasn't technically 'fired' so it was totally okay.
It feels kinda backwards as they are so eager to encourage couples to have kids that Japanese families get a $5,000 stipend for each child they have plus some other perks while simultaneously doing little about a work culture that shits on women for having kids or at least greatly discourages them.
Japanese society's lack of self-awareness in regards to the behaviours causing their demographic crisis is simply astounding
yeah, thank god you're a messiah at posting: https://forum.facepunch.com/f/p/33626066/
jesus can we get real rules back so we can stop squabbling like children
On Oldpunch more than half the posters in this thread would've been banned by now.
It's interesting to see how this behaviour has to do with the bursting of the Japanese Miracle.
Japan's Worsening Social Divide
how about this concept
why don't you not only increase the amount of doctors that can graduate(because there's plenty of fucking capable candidates that don't get passed per year anyways due to bullshit quotas), so that you increase the amount of doctors in the workforce, so you have more people to fill in the gaps when they do happen.
jesus christ, as advanced as Japan is, it's got some hilariously archaic schools of thought that shouldn't exist in a 1st world country in 2018. sometimes it makes us Americans look superb.
You were so close to just turning this into a respectful debate, but NOOOOOOOOOOO
Reading the thread about Japan's situation just reminds me of my country's own situation. It's not as terrible as Japan's but still serious enough for the government to make a PSA regarding stopping workplace discrimination.
Theres a lot of parallels I can see here, aging population, gender inequality, low birth rate etc. It's like my country is experiencing the lite version of the issues Japan faces today. While we can somewhat alleviate the low birth rate issue by immigration unlike Japan which is still very xenophobic, I can't help but feel that it's not a permanent solution, not to mention our lack of space and all. This leaves me very worried about the future when these problems grows even larger. The government might be doing stuff trying to solve it, but like Japan, it's mainly subsidies and bonuses for childbirth with little to tackle the actual social issues that is causing the low birth rate in the first place, mainly high cost of living and the aforementioned gender inequality.
no you see he's doubling down on a RIGHT opinion there, big difference. almost as big as his brain.
Wow this drama is pretty dumb not gonna lie
I can't believe you people are making me say "Back in my day" when I'm 24. This thread is pretty embarrassing to read.
I have a wonderful concept for Japan.
It's called part-time jobs.
fight
Fucking over female employees because of pregnancy is pretty common in the world as a whole sadly. It does seem to be particularly bad in Japan though, I wonder if it might have some connection to their low birthrates. Seems to me like they've created an environment that discourages people from having kids, and their band aid solutions aren't fixing that.
Must've been great when we got banned for not having same opinions as rest of "hivemind"
Japan has one of the meanest right wing parties in the developed world, the idea that Japan is super cool, tolerant and welcoming is basically a huge lie.
I mean, I still love several aspects of Japan and they can be very friendly people, but some of the social aspects are truly awful, especially when it comes to women.
Cause that totally happened. It definitely wasn't that those people were atrocious posters in the first place. Strangely enough a lot of conservative posters around here have an infuriating habit of being really mediocre posters at best. Just look at people like Cyke Lon Bee who can't even refrain from insulting anyone who disagrees with him. Something that would've seen him swiftly banned before the rules were relaxed. Not because of his unpopular opinions but because it's not conducive to a good forum.
