Switzerland plane crash
A vintage Swiss military plane, which was saved from being mothballed by a national fundraising campaign, has crashed into a mountain in the Alps, killing all 20 people onboard. The JU-52 HB-HOT aircraft, which was constructed in 1939, was flying from Locarno, near Switzerland’s southern border, to airline JU-Air’s base in Dübendorf, a suburb of Zurich. It crashed into the western peak of Piz Segnas, a 3,000-metre (10,000-ft) mountain above the resort of Flims, in the south-east of the country, shortly before 5pm (4pm BST) on Saturday, the impact occurring at 2,540 metres. The victims – 11 men and nine women, aged from 42 to 84, including two pilots and a flight attendant– were all Swiss, apart from an Austrian couple and their son.
The Company's first crash with any fatalities since they opened in 1982, the plane had also been used in some movies like Where Eagles dare as well.
I wonder what happened? These planes will generally fly forever with good upkeep. This is the first Ju-52 crash since 1949 even though they flew them in passenger service well into the 80s.
Terrible fucking shame all around.
So sad. It must have been fast.
Apparently it crashed after vertically falling out of the sky, so thankfully probably instantly for most people.
Does raise a few questions of the how variety though.
Updraft around the mountain could kill the wings ability to produce lift; unrecoverable stall.
In the air for 79 years. That's one hell of a plane.
eeeeh, planes keep going for quite a long time. you basically rebuild every part that matters multiple times over that span (especially if it's used for a business.)
that sounds most likely tbh. mountain flying is pretty dangerous and requires special training.
